LegalZoom is seeking an experienced Managing Attorney to lead its trademark practice and a team of trademark attorneys. This role involves managing a diverse group of attorneys, providing coaching, guidance, and support to ensure high-quality client experiences and professional development. The Managing Attorney will collaborate with firm leadership and fulfillment to streamline trademark processes, serve as a trademark expert for the team and clients, and handle escalations. They will also contribute to developing innovative trademark offerings to support small businesses, playing a crucial role in increasing access to legal services.
Must have:
  • Manage and maintain a high-performing team of Trademark Attorneys, Senior Attorneys, and Staff Attorneys.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and development, including leading performance management efforts.
  • Interview and lead recruitment and training efforts for new Trademark Attorney classes.
  • Monitor and track team productivity metrics, ensuring quality and compliance oversight.
  • Lead quality reviews of cases, arguments, and consultations, and manage docketing deadlines.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for attorneys on key trademark topics.
  • Act as the highest escalation point for customer escalations.
  • Build and maintain a close working relationship with the firm’s fulfillment group.
  • Review and approve filings, arguments, and third-party matters, providing quality and compliance oversight.
  • Participate in high-priority strategic projects and initiatives with cross-functional teams.

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Managing Attorney to oversee our trademark practice and lead a team of trademark attorneys. In this role, you will manage a diverse group of attorneys, providing coaching, guidance, and support to ensure excellent and high-quality client experiences, while continually enhancing their strengths and professional development. You will work closely with firm leadership, fulfillment, and other managing attorneys, to facilitate an efficient and streamlined end-to-end trademark process. You will serve as a trademark expert, assisting your team and our clients with opinions and advice, and you will be the last line of defense in escalations and complex matters. You will contribute to the development of innovative trademark offerings aimed at supporting small businesses in registering and protecting their trademarks. Your leadership will play a crucial role in increasing access to legal services for small business clients.

You will

  • Manage and maintain a high-performing team of Trademark Attorneys, Senior Attorneys, and Staff Attorneys supporting the Attorney Led Trademark offering and related services.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and development that reflects each team member's strengths and opportunities, including leading performance management efforts in partnership with HR where necessary.
  • In partnership with firm leadership, interviews and leads recruitment and training efforts for new Trademark Attorney classes.
  • Monitors and tracks team productivity metrics, ensuring quality and compliance oversight, and identifying gaps and proposing solutions.
  • Lead quality reviews of cases, arguments, and consultations, as well as manage docketing deadlines for the team.
  • Provide professional development opportunities for attorneys focused on key trademark topics, including substantive trademark law, legal writing, and consultation practices.
  • Acts as the highest escalation point for customer escalations in partnership with LZLS leadership.
  • Build and maintain a close working relationship with the firm’s fulfillment group to coordinate the end-to-end trademark process.
  • Review and approve filings, arguments, and third-party matters, and provide quality and compliance oversight for the team.
  • Participate in high-priority strategic projects and initiatives with cross-functional teams.

You have

  • Minimum of 6 years U.S. trademark prosecution experience.
  • Leadership experience with coaching and developing teams.
  • An exhibited ability to promote engagement and satisfaction among a group of professional employees.
  • Enthusiasm for practicing trademark law in an extremely fast-paced, non-traditional environment.
  • The competence and confidence to tell clients what you would do if you were the client.
  • Superb oral and written communication skills with the ability to explain legal concepts to non-attorneys on a regular basis over the phone and online.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and ability to prioritize workflow and adjust to workload fluctuations.
  • Excellent organizational skills to balance multiple priorities, deadlines and critical assignments that may require short-notice deliverables.
  • A J.D. from an accredited law school or its equivalent and a license to practice law in good standing with at least one state bar.
