Job Description

This role is about making an impact, putting people first, and expanding possibilities within Wabtec Corporation, specifically with Aero Transportation Products (ATP). As a Manufacturing Engineer in McPherson, KS, you will develop, implement, and document robust and cost-effective manufacturing processes, work instructions, and methods. This includes designing tooling, evaluating engineering changes, and implementing lean manufacturing improvements. You will collaborate with plant leadership and manage the R&D Technician, contributing to the production of fiberglass, steel, and aluminum components for the rail industry.
Must have:
  • Develop, implement, and document robust and cost-effective manufacturing processes.
  • Develop, implement, and document work instructions and methods.
  • Ensure processes align with product specifications, safety, quality, and customer demand.
  • Lead the design of required tooling and accessories.
  • Continually evaluate design and engineering changes for manufacturing feasibility.
  • Recommend and implement production process improvements using lean manufacturing principles.
  • Collaborate closely with plant leadership.
  • Manage the R&D Technician.
  • Lead the refinement of manufacturing processes to enhance product quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Collaborate daily with operations leaders to review performance data and resolve challenges.
  • Attend and participate in various meetings in a proactive, professional, and purposeful manner.
  • Dedicate time to walking, observing, and supporting site processes.
  • Use company systems and applications to document processes, resolve problems, or develop improvements.
  • Review key performance indicators of business processes to identify trends, risks, or opportunities.
  • Send progress reports on engineering tasks and projects.

Who are we?

We are Aero Transportation Products (ATP), a business organization part of the greater Wabtec Corporation. Established in 1979 and purchased by Wabtec in 2017, our organization has supported the Agriculture and Industrial arena as an innovator in the rail industry for 45 years. We have designed and built products that both feed and house everyone throughout North America and are working on new products for applications in Europe and beyond.

Who will you be working with?

This position is part of ATP, which includes sites located in Independence, MO and in McPherson, KS. Our Independence site is based in an underground industrial complex customized for Fiberglass production. The McPherson site is a metal fabrication and weld shop, in the picturesque setting of America's Heartland. The ATP team is comprised of a diverse group from varying backgrounds, all motivated by an enjoyable and positive work culture. ATP team members primarily support the production of fiberglass, steel and aluminum hatch covers and mild and stainless stainless-steel outlet gates for Wabtec’s Freight Components division.

This role is specific to the McPherson, KS, providing additional support the Independence, MO location as needed.

How will you make a difference?

As a member of the McPherson-based team, the Manufacturing Engineer will develop, implement, and document robust and cost-effective manufacturing processes, work instructions, and methods. This is be completed in accordance with product specifications, safety and quality standards, and customer demand. The Manufacturing Engineer will lead the design of required tooling and accessories, while continually evaluating design and engineering changes that will be released to manufacturing upon feasibility. They will recommend and implement improvements in production processes, using the principles of lean manufacturing. They will collaborate closely with plant leadership and will manage the R&D Technician.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Mechanical, Electrical or Industrial Engineering or related engineering.
  • At least three to five or more years of manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Strong foundation in lean manufacturing practices.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in welding, machining and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Must be detail-orientated, organized, and have strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve project goals.
  • Demonstrate a high aptitude for troubleshooting technical issues and proposing solutions during product development.
  • Proficient in basic mechanical and electrical principles, with the ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Communicate, in English, effectively and clearly by both written and verbal means.
  • Work effectively with fellow employees and independently.
  • Familiarity with engineering software.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
  • Dependability under both supervised and unsupervised conditions.

  • Attend and participate in various meetings in a proactive, professional, and purposeful manner.
  • Dedicate time to walking, observing and supporting site processes.
  • If necessary, use the company's different systems and applications to document the process, resolve problems or develop improvements.
  • Review the key performance indicators of business processes to identify trends, risks or opportunities.
  • Send progress reports on engineering tasks and projects.

What about the physical demands of the job?

  • The main working condition will be in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electronic office equipment.
  • While in areas of operations, employees must wear correct PPE – earplugs, protective eye wear, steel-toed boots, and other work provided uniform
  • May be exposed to extreme cold or hot weather conditions in areas of operations.
  • The employee may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise. Appropriate safety measures will be available in these occurrences.
  • The employee will be expected to practice and maintain safe working conditions.

You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The salary range for this role is between

$77,400.00-$110,300.00

The actual salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as: training, transferable skills, work experience, education, business needs, market demands and work location.
