Job Description

The Seal Repair Technician is responsible for the disassembly and assembly of rotating equipment, performing detailed inspections (DCI), documenting wear and condition of components, and completing inspection forms. This role involves identifying and inspecting returned materials, ensuring cleanliness, assembling seals, and performing simple shop operations like drilling and lapping. The technician verifies part specifications using measuring instruments and may assist with purchase orders and customer contact.
Must have:
  • Responsible for disassembly and assembly of rotating equipment.
  • Perform DCI (Dismantle Clean and Inspect) and describe component wear.
  • Complete inspection forms, take pictures, and use inspection equipment.
  • Identify, inspect, and evaluate returned material.
  • Ensure components are cleaned per departmental procedures.
  • Perform seal assembly once repair is released and components are ready.
  • Repair returned seals and seal parts under close supervision.
  • Determine necessary repair operations and ensure BOM/drawings/repair parts match.
  • Perform simple operations on drill press, tool post grinder, bead blast polisher, and lapping machine.
  • Verify part specifications with measuring instruments (micrometer, vernier caliper, dial indicator, optical flats).
  • Initiate purchase orders for new jobs if vendors are involved.
  • Consult with Engineering or Sales departments as necessary.
  • Maintain necessary records and small inventory of seal parts for repair orders.
  • Work from factory work orders, prints, rework orders, and verbal instructions.
  • Assist newer repair personnel as necessary.
  • Set up and troubleshoot lapping machines for repair maintenance.
  • Perform direct contact with customers on service and/or phone, check computer system for credit and address information, price repairs.
Good to have:
  • Experience with mechanical seals

Job Description

Under general supervision, the Seal Repair Technician is responsible for all processes related to disassembly and assembly of rotating equipment. The Seal Repair Technician follows instruction from a Repair job packet and router to perform DCI (Dismantle Clean and Inspect) and gives a written description of the wear and condition of critical components seal.

This position completes all inspection forms, taking pictures of all critical components, and uses inspection equipment for proper documentation of the assembly. With assistance identifies, inspects and evaluates material returned, determines repair operations, performs simple shop operations, verify specifications, initiate work and purchase orders.

  • Receives John Crane parts and materials returned by customers and branch offices. Evaluates from a condition of material, checks current drawing revisions and general product knowledge whether material is repairable or non-repairable.
  • Identifies and inspects material returned.
  • Ensures all components are properly cleaned and free from foreign material per departmental procedures
  • Performs the assembly of the seal once the repair has been released to the shop and all components have been replaced or reconditioned and marked ready for assembly.
  • Under close supervision, repairs returned seals and seal parts.
  • May perform parts structuring, checks cost structure, and determines price of repair, ensures assembly is structured correctly, and price repair.
  • Determines necessary repair operations, ensures BOM (bill of materials) / drawings / repair parts match.
  • Performs simple operations on drill press (single spindle), tool post grinder, bead blast polisher and lapping machine.
  • Verifies part specifications with measuring instruments such as micrometer, vernier caliper, dial indicator and optical flats.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience in mechanical assembly positions
  • Experience with mechanical seals is a plus
