Room 8 Group is an end-to-end strategic partner in external game development. Working across all platforms, we provide creative and technical expertise across game development, technology, art, trailers, and QA for AAA and AA games.
Since 2011, we’ve built creative partnerships with world-leading publishers such as Microsoft, Nintendo, Ubisoft, Sony, Gameloft, Take2, EA, and more. While leveraging our own cutting-edge tools and R&D capabilities, we’ve co-created a multitude of award-winning projects for video game IPs and franchises including Call of Duty, Diablo, Assassin’s Creed, Star Trek, The Walking Dead, Doctor Who, and many more.
Through primarily organic growth, we are proudly independent, now home to around 1,100 creatives based in Europe, North America, and South America.
We are seeking an expert Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) for a unique engagement. You will be embedded directly within one of the world’s top mobile game studios, acting as a vital bridge between their central automation team and a dynamic game team.
This is not a typical “ticket-based” role. You will be treated as a core team member, empowered to identify the most pressing QA pain points and architect the solutions. Your mission is to partner with developers and QAs to design and implement in-engine tooling and automation that directly reduces manual testing effort, enhances build visibility, and improves overall quality. The scope is discovery-led, collaborative, and focused on delivering tangible impact.
Superpowers you have:
- Expert-level C++ proficiency, with specific, hands-on experience working inside a large codebase or game engine to add tooling and test hooks.
- Proven experience with C++ build systems (CMake, Gradle, or similar) and integrating custom automation into CI/CD pipelines.
- Demonstrable experience extending test automation frameworks and writing scenario-level tests for complex applications (ideally in gaming).
- Professional fluency with Jenkins for CI/CD and Perforce for version control.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder management skills. You must be able to operate autonomously, build relationships with developers and QAs, and drive a project from discovery to delivery.
- Competence in at least one scripting language suitable for build/CI automation (e.g., Python, Groovy, Shell).
You’re a rockstar if you have:
- Deep familiarity with the mobile gaming ecosystem (Android & iOS).
- Experience with device-cloud testing (e.g., Sauce Labs, BrowserStack) and stabilizing flaky E2E test suites.
- Exposure to integrating new automation platforms within existing products.
- Experience in maintaining or integrating performance tests in CI.
Becoming part of Room 8 Group, you will:
- In-Engine C++ Development: Dive deep into the game’s C++ codebase to add and refine debug commands, create testability hooks, and extend the core automation framework to support complex test scenarios.
- Build & CI Pipeline Integration: Work with CMake, Gradle, and Jenkins to evolve build configurations, implement custom tooling, and integrate automated post-build checks (e.g., data and balance comparisons) into the CI pipeline.
- QA Enablement & Automation: Collaborate directly with game QAs to understand their workflows, identify high-value targets for automation, and convert repetitive manual test cases into robust, reliable automated scenarios. You will provide patterns and documentation to empower the team.
- Process Modernization: Identify and improve obsolete or unreliable CI/CD steps, increasing the clarity and efficiency of QA workflows.
- Strategic Contribution: Assist with improving E2E test stability in device clouds and help integrate a new, next-generation test automation system into the game during the latter half of the engagement.
The Tech Stack
- Engine/Language: C++ (in-engine and tooling)
- Build/CI/VCS: CMake, Gradle, Jenkins, Perforce
- Platforms: Mobile (Android/iOS)
