Thales Canada, Defence & Security is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer for the LC4ISR ISTAR group in Ottawa. This role supports the Canadian Army's digitized operations, focusing on Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance systems. The engineer will lead an agile team, manage ISTAR Configuration Item components, develop test automation, and create technical documentation, contributing to advanced military operations in Canada and overseas.
Must have:
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in complex systems design and integration (commercial/military domains)
  • Ability to obtain Canadian Controlled Goods Program eligibility and NATO Secret clearance
  • University or college degree in engineering or related discipline
  • Tailor system engineering process, practices, and tools
  • Estimate and decompose work in an agile lifecycle process
  • Develop preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements
  • Author technical documentation (VDDs, ICDs, test plans, procedures, installation guidelines)
  • Lead a team using Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
  • Manage and maintain ISTAR Configuration Items (CI) components
  • Lead test automation development (Squish, Python)
Good to have:
  • Experience using IBM’s Engineering Lifecycle Management (EWM) tool
  • VMware Virtual Environments experience
  • GitLab experience
  • .net, C#, Java experience

Position Summary

Defence & Security is engaged in supporting the Canadian Army’s Land Command, Control, Communications & Computers (C4) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (LC4ISR) systems which enable critical decisions on a daily basis. Together with industry partners, Thales is building on the existing networks and applications to enhance digitized operations, support communications between joint and allied forces, and monitor and defend against the threats and evolving capabilities of potential adversaries.

Thales Canada is looking for people interested in directly contributing to the evolution of advanced digitized operations for the Canadian Army into the future, both in Canada and on overseas deployments. The LC4ISR work is broadly divided into four areas, and this opportunity is with the Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) group at our Ottawa office. We are looking for a systems engineer to lead and manage a team using agile methodologies. The system engineer will also be responsible to lead- test automation development, manage and maintain ISTAR Configuration Item components and create, edit and review technical documentation.

Key Areas of Responsibility

A systems engineer should be comfortable in multidisciplinary and collaborative environments, performing duties such as:

  • Tailor the system engineering process, practices and tools;
  • Estimate and appropriately decompose work in an agile lifecycle process;
  • Provide timely and accurate status updates;
  • Develop the preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements;
  • Review and validate internal and subcontractor designs, plans, and schedules;
  • Identify, characterize, and describe issues in the system or its design through problem reports and document and design reviews;
  • Author technical documentation to capture the system and subsystem designs including the architecture, interfaces, and installation elements;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the designs are consistent with needs, desires, and concerns of the end-users;
  • Support the development of verification and validation artifacts including plans and procedures;
  • Collaborate with other functions during the implementation and integration of the system and subsystem designs;
  • Resolution of technical issues arising during the implementation, integration and testing of the system and subsystem elements;
  • Support the installation and/or integration testing of the systems remotely or on customer site; and/or
  • Technical subcontract management including management of work scope and compliance of the (subcontractor) supplied solution;

The specific duties associated with the project role could include:

  • Lead a team using a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)
  • Estimate and decompose system and subsystem work into manageable tasks
  • Guide and mentor the team through system design and development
  • Tools and software used by the team include GitLab, .net, C#, and Java
  • Manage and maintain ISTAR Configuration Items (CI) components,
  • Ensure all system components such as ISTAR Plugins (SC2PS, Sitaware and WinTak), File Transfer Service (FST), and SC2PS Motion Video Player (SMVP) are fully functional and aligned with customer requirements.
  • Create, edit, review technical documentation such as Version Description Documents (VDDs), Interface Control Documents, (ICDs), Software test plans, procedures and installation guidelines
  • Lead test automation development (using Squish , Python) including approving merge requests for new test automation development.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains.
  • Ability to obtain clearances as specified under the Regulatory Compliance section, below.
  • University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Preferred Experience

In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • Experience using IBM’s Engineering Lifecycle Management (EWM) tool,
  • VMware Virtual Environments
  • GitLab,
  • .net,
  • C#,
  • Java

Physical Demands

  • Minimal lifting of test and electronic equipment, connecting equipment in a lab environment or job site (including onboard vehicle or vessel).

Special Position Requirements

  • 40 hours per week
  • Hybrid position – a mix of working from home and onsite (Some on-site work required in the lab).
  • Possibility of occasional travel to customer site for technical support / integration activities. Possibility of occasional travel within Canada for planning events.
