SurveyMonkey is seeking a Software Engineer II specializing in Security Engineering. This role involves developing a wide range of services and tools such as rate limiters, secret stores, and data anonymizers. The engineer will work with various teams across the company to ensure world-class security standards and data privacy practices. Responsibilities include creating API-driven backend services using Python and Terraform, assisting application teams with service deployment and adoption, collecting feedback for new tools, reviewing threat models, and participating in code reviews. The position offers opportunities to work with both front-end and back-end technologies.
Must have:
  • 2+ years of experience in application development
  • Proficient in Python or equivalent
  • Cloud environment development and deployment experience (especially AWS)
  • Infrastructure-as-code experience (especially Terraform)
  • Cryptography libraries experience or familiarity with cryptographic operations
Good to have:
  • NodeJS experience
  • Experience with web application security risks (e.g., OWASP Top 10)
  • Familiarity with privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA)

What we’re looking for

The Security Engineering team is looking for a Software Engineer with experience in or a deep interest in software security and data privacy.  Our team works with teams across the company to help ensure that SurveyMonkey’s security standards and practices are world-class.You’ll have the opportunity to develop a wide range of services and tools like rate limiters, secret stores, data anonymizers, and other foundational elements of security and data privacy.  These services are used by a wide variety of internal teams, so you will have an opportunity to work with front-end and back-end technologies.

What you’ll be working on

  • Working in a mix of python and Terraform most days, with shell scripting and JavaScript on occasion.
  • Creating API-driven back end services that are used across many of SurveyMonkey’s engineering teams.
  • Helping application teams deploy and use our services, and collecting ideas from those teams for new tools.
  • Assisting in reviewing threat models for new application features.
  • Participating in code reviews.

We’d love to hear from people with

  • 2+ years of experience with application development
  • Proficient in Python or equivalent; NodeJS experience a plus
  • Hands-on experience developing for and deploying to cloud environments, especially AWS
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code, especially Terraform
  • Experience with cryptography libraries, or familiarity with cryptographic operations like encryption, hashing, and digital signatures.
  • Experience with web application security risks and control (e.g., OWASP Top 10) or privacy regulations like GDPR, CCPA, etc is a major plus

SurveyMonkey believes in-person collaboration is valuable for building relationships, fostering community, and enhancing our speed and execution in problem-solving and decision-making. As such, you will be required to work from a SurveyMonkey office up to 1 day per week.
