Job Description

welevel is seeking an Art Director to lead the visual vision for their RPG and survival games. This role involves collaborating with the Game Director, Tech Leads, and Creative Director to create a grounded, cinematic, and immersive world. The Art Director will guide the art team, ensuring visual coherence and quality across all elements, from macro world-building to micro asset details. Responsibilities include defining visual identity, leading the development of style guides, overseeing environments, characters, lighting, UI, and VFX, mentoring artists, and ensuring consistency between procedural and hand-placed elements. The role requires close collaboration with other departments to align visuals with design and story, providing feedback throughout the art production pipeline and managing visual scope with production plans.
Must have:
  • 3+ years of professional experience in AAA game development
  • Portfolio showcasing hyper-realistic environments, characters, lighting, and visual storytelling
  • Deep understanding of composition, color theory, materiality, and physical realism
  • Strong leadership and mentoring experience across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
Good to have:
  • Solid familiarity with Unreal Engine 5, ZBrush, Blender, Marvelous Designer
  • Ability to balance creative ambition with production constraints and technical limitations

Your Role
As Art Director, you will be responsible for the overall visual vision of the game—ensuring coherence, quality, and emotional impact across every visual element. You’ll collaborate closely with the Game Director, Tech Leads, and Creative Director to deliver a grounded, cinematic world that feels handcrafted, alive, and utterly immersive. You will guide the art team at both a high level and through detailed reviews, balancing artistic ambition with production realities.

Responsibilities
  • Define and own the visual identity of a hyper-realistic survival RPG, from macro world-building to micro asset detail
  • Lead the development of visual style guides and art bibles to align internal and external teams
  • Oversee all aspects of visual development: environments, characters, lighting, UI, VFX, and cinematics
  • Guide and inspire a team of leads and senior artists to reach visual excellence
  • Ensure consistency and fidelity across procedurally generated and hand-placed elements
  • Work cross-functionally with tech, gameplay, narrative, and audio teams to ensure visuals support design and story
  • Provide high-level feedback and hands-on direction throughout the art production pipeline
  • Align visual scope and quality targets with production plans and deadlines

Requirements
  • 3+ years of professional experience in AAA game development
  • A portfolio showcasing hyper-realistic environments, characters, lighting, and visual storytelling
  • Deep understanding of composition, color theory, materiality, and physical realism
  • Strong leadership and mentoring experience across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Solid familiarity with Unreal Engine 5, ZBrush, Blender, Marvelous Designer—no need to be an expert, but understand what’s possible
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate artistic decisions and inspire teams
  • Ability to balance creative ambition with production constraints and technical limitations
