OLG is seeking an Articling Student for the 2025-2026 term to support its "GAME ON" strategy. This role offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment involving public and private law, and public policy within Ontario's gaming industry. Articling students will gain experience in commercial law, regulatory compliance, and litigation within a busy in-house legal team, collaborating with business colleagues across internet gaming, lottery, sports betting, land-based casinos, and charitable gaming. Responsibilities include supporting commercial transactions, strategic management of disputes, and working on initiatives related to new lottery games, internet gaming, digital analytics, and sports betting. Mentorship will be provided by experienced OLG lawyers.

GAME ON – OLG needs you

We’ve said GAME ON, and we mean it – OLG is rapidly transforming its organization to better serve Ontarians by delivering great gaming experiences through our internet, retail lottery, and land-based gaming channels. Over the course of fiscal 2023-24, OLG delivered $2.4 billion in net profit to the Province of Ontario. OLG is now expanding our horizons even further, with a new strategic direction, to become a world class gaming entertainment leader with a globally admired digital platform. 

OLG’s articling student program provides an excellent opportunity to support the organization’s GAME ON strategy and work in a dynamic environment combining public and private law and public policy, in the heart of Ontario’s gaming industry. Articling students at OLG will work in a wide range of practice areas including commercial law, regulatory compliance, and litigation. You will be part of a busy in-house legal team and work directly with business colleagues in the areas of internet gaming, lottery, sports betting, land-based casinos and charitable gaming. You will support commercial transactions and initiatives and participate in the strategic management and resolution of complex disputes and business issues.  You will learn about and support OLG’s initiatives in the public interest, including innovation in areas such as new lottery games, internet gaming, digital analytics, and sports betting.  You will also work closely with and be mentored by lawyers at OLG who bring experience from major law firms, multi-national corporations, and provincial regulators.

OLG’s articling program runs for approximately 10 months. OLG currently follows a hybrid approach of working remotely up to two days a week and working from our 4120 Yonge St.  (Toronto) location at least three days a week. OLG’s remote work policy is subject to change from time to time.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITY AREAS:

  • Here are some examples of the work you may do over your articling term at OLG: Providing legal support, analysis and guidance to internal clients in areas of law including: commercial, marketing and advertising, gaming, technology, constitutional, administrative, real estate, intellectual property, internet, procurement, municipal, freedom of information, privacy, human rights, and employment.

  • Supporting commercial transactions and OLG’s business and strategic objectives in the areas of internet gaming, lottery, sports betting, land-based casinos, charitable gaming, and OLG’s social responsibility initiatives.

  • Assisting with the review, development and implementation of internal policies and processes addressing legal and regulatory compliance requirements, risk management measures, and industry best practices.

  • Working on litigation and compliance matters, including participating in strategic discussions.

  • Collaborating with internal counsel, business clients and OLG’s external counsel.

  • Preparing and presenting briefing materials for internal clients.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent academic results

  • Interest in public service in a commercially-driven environment

  • Interest in commercial law and the other areas of legal practice offered at OLG, and the ability and enthusiasm to work in a wide range of legal areas

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with individuals with diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to effectively work with a variety of lawyers and business colleagues in both a team environment and independently as required, with a client service focus

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Completion of a law degree (J.D. or equivalent)

  • Registered in the Lawyer Licensing Process with the Law Society of Ontario
