Job Description

We are seeking a Deputy Editor with a strong background in research and editorial experience to join Communications Health, a new multidisciplinary, open-access journal in the Nature Portfolio. This new launch will publish research spanning public and global health domains, including research, policy, implementation, and delivery. The journal will champion equity, diversity, and inclusion in health. The Deputy Editor will lead the journal’s editorial strategy, manage a diverse and efficient Editorial Board, and oversee part of the internal editorial team. Key responsibilities include launch activities support and community outreach.
Must have:
  • Define journal aims and scope, develop website, plan outreach activities, and set up the journal.
  • Line-manage part of the internal team at Communications Health.
  • Grow the editorial board for adequate subject area coverage.
  • Oversee and develop Editorial Board Member engagement.
  • Handle original research papers and oversee peer review.
  • Liaise extensively with editors at other journals and international scientific community experts.
  • Attend conferences and visit research institutions (in person and online).
  • Commission Reviews and Comment articles and write Editorials.
  • Suggest and oversee Collections according to programme.
  • Ensure Production receives manuscripts in an appropriate and complete state.
  • PhD (or equivalent) in public and global health.
  • Previous experience coordinating peer review and making independent manuscript decisions within a world-class STM publishing company.
  • Genuine passion for scientific communication and promoting rigor and transparency.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English.
  • Eagerness to engage with scientists worldwide.
  • Strong workload management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs.

About the Role

We are seeking a Deputy Editor with a strong background in research and editorial experience to join Communications Health - a new multidisciplinary, open-access journal in the Nature Portfolio. This new launch will publish research spanning the wide spectrum of public and global health domains, including research, policy, implementation and delivery. The journal will champion equity, diversity and inclusion in health. The journal will initially be run jointly with Nature Communications, with a combined internal team and a joint Chief Editor, but with a separate Editorial Board. Communications Health complements our other Nature Portfolio open access titles, such as Nature Communications, the other Communications series journals, Scientific Reports, as well as the suite of NPJs.

The Deputy Editor at Communications Health will be responsible for leading the journal’s editorial strategy, liaising closely with the Chief Editor for building and managing a diverse and efficient Editorial Board, and for managing part of the team of internal editors. Key responsibilities of the Deputy Editor include support of launch activities, outreach to relevant communities, and ensuring the Editorial Board Members cover the full breadth of subject areas and are engaged.

The position is offered on a full-time basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Working with the Chief Editor to define journal aims and scope, develop the website, plan outreach activities, and work with internal teams to set up the journal
  • Line-managing part of the internal team at Communications Health
  • Growing the editorial board to ensure adequate subject area coverage across the topics covered by the journal, in consultation with the in-house team and the Chief Editor
  • Overseeing and developing Editorial Board Member engagement with the journal
  • Handling original research papers and working closely with other editors on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review, at a 50% workload of a Senior Editor
  • Liaising extensively with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio family and with experts in the international scientific community
  • Attending conferences and visiting research institutions (in person and online)
  • Commissioning Reviews and Comment articles and writing Editorials
  • Suggesting and overseeing Collections according to Collections programme
  • Ensuring Production receives manuscripts in an appropriate and complete state
  • Other tasks as required

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a discipline immediately relevant to public and global health
  • Previous experience coordinating peer review and making independent manuscript decisions within a world-class STM publishing company
  • Experience working with an external editorial board is desirable
  • A genuine passion for scientific communication and promoting rigor and transparency in reporting research
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English (written and spoken)
  • An eagerness to engage with scientists worldwide, learn more about them and their research, and help them learn more about us and what we are looking for in the papers we seek to publish
  • Strong workload management and organisational skills
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $110,000 - $125,000. This role is eligible for an annual performance-related bonus plan. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
