Job Description

Qualcomm is seeking a bright and ambitious Embedded Software Engineering Intern for a 3-6 month placement in Cambridge. The role involves designing, developing, and testing embedded software for Qualcomm’s wireless chips, specifically within the Audio subsystem of the Voice and Music Business Unit. Interns will work on DSP frameworks, hardware drivers, algorithm integration, and debugging, primarily using C programming. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about SoC architecture, customer scenarios, and Machine Learning, with encouragement for ownership and independent thinking.

Must Have:
  • Design, develop and test embedded software for Qualcomm’s wireless chips
  • Focus on Qualcomm’s Audio subsystem within the Voice and Music Business Unit
  • Develop audio processing systems, DSP frameworks, applications, and hardware drivers
  • Integrate algorithms into the DSP framework and develop test scenarios and debug problems
  • Proficiency in C programming language for software development
  • Assist in the production of quality embedded software for Qualcomm products
  • Help solve complex issues and debug code
  • Provide support on customer issues/requirements to application engineers
  • Contribute to project planning and timescales
  • Assist in the creation of engineering documentation
  • Support the development of Qualcomm intellectual property and submission of patent applications
  • Suggest possible new DSP technologies to consider
  • Investigate where existing implementations can be improved
  • Apply new techniques/ideas to solve problems and optimize existing solutions
  • Work with hardware teams to specify requirements of new hardware and test initial implementations
  • Good degree in Maths, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or equivalent
  • Familiarity with at least 2 of these languages: C, Python, Matlab, Perl

General Summary:

The role of the Embedded Software Engineer is to design, develop and test embedded software for Qualcomm’s wireless chips, focussing on Qualcomm’s Audio subsystem within the Voice and Music Business Unit. Working as part of a team, the work involves developing audio processing systems, working on DSP frameworks and applications, Hardware drivers, integrating algorithms into the DSP framework and developing test scenarios and debugging problems.

Most of the software development will be in C programming language, although different tools used within the development environment make use of other programming languages such as Python. The work of the team is central to the development of our Voice and Music products and there are plenty of opportunities to learn about the wider system, SoC architecture, customer scenarios, use of Machine Learning and more. This is an excellent opportunity for a bright student who is eager to learn and grow.

We’d encourage ownership of component and independent thinking alongside guidance provided by senior engineers within the team.

Key Responsibilities:

Person Specification:

  • Bright, ambitious engineering students with a thirst to learn and develop new skills.
  • Good degree in Maths, Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or equivalent.
  • Enthusiasm for solving interesting problems. Demonstrated innovative and creative thinking capabilities.
  • Familiarity with at least 2 of these languages: C, Python, Matlab, Perl.
  • Highly professional, flexible, with the ability to deliver high-quality work on tight schedules.
  • Eager to learn, self-motivated, independent, proactive, and able to work effectively in a group.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of signal processing theory and techniques would be advantageous but not essential
