As a Lead Groom Artist, you will be responsible for leading a team of groom artists, ensuring the successful delivery of high-quality groom, including hair, fur & feathers for a variety of characters and creatures across various projects while collaborating with the supervision team to ensure the creative and technical needs are fulfilled. This role requires a strong understanding of the visual effects pipeline, excellent technical and artistic skills, and the ability to mentor and guide junior artists.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a team of CFX Groom artists, providing clear guidance, feedback, and technical support.
- Create high-quality hair, fur, and feather grooms for characters and creatures, adhering to artistic and technical specifications.
- Develop and implement efficient grooming workflows, tools, and pipelines.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to grooming, including simulation, texturing, rendering and integration.
- Optimize grooms for performance and memory efficiency without compromising visual fidelity.
- Collaborate closely with various departments, including modeling, surfacing and internal CFX setup artists to ensure seamless integration of groom into the pipeline.
- Collaborate with CFX Department Supervisor/s and Show Supervisor/s to maintain a high standard of quality and consistency across all CFX assets in the project.
- Contribute to the development of departmental best practices and documentation.
- Participate in bidding and scheduling discussions as needed.
- Ensure that all CFX work adheres to project deadlines and budget constraints.
- Mentor and train junior groom artists, fostering their growth and development.
- Contribute to the development of departmental best practices and documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree/Diploma in Digital Arts or equivalent experience (preferred)
- Working knowledge of Maya and XGen is required
- Excellent knowledge of Zbrush and/or Mudbox
- Mari, 3ds Max, V-Ray, and Nuke experience is a plus
- Excellent technical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Experience working on creatures, digital doubles, topology, and blend shapes (preferred)
- Eye for detail and able to QA their own work to ensure the highest quality before assets handoff
- Excellent time management and prioritization skills; experience working under tight deadlines
- Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as a team player
- A clear understanding of color space, shading, lighting, and rendering methodologies
