Job Description

The Lead Modeler at ILM is responsible for creating high-quality 3D models for complex assets, including creatures, hard-surface models, and environments. This role requires collaboration with the production team, mentoring junior artists, and leading the modeling team in the absence of the Model Supervisor. Responsibilities include working independently and as part of a team, setting up asset workflows, participating in design solutions, and maintaining high productivity. The ideal candidate will have strong skills in industry-standard software (Zbrush, Maya), experience with 3D scans and 2D artwork, and a portfolio demonstrating traditional artistic skills. Experience in Houdini is a plus.

Your role?

The Lead Modeller is responsible for creating high quality models, providing creative solutions that fulfills the artistic and technical brief of the asset, while providing guidance to others on the model team.

What will you be doing?

  • Work independently and with the production team (VFX Supervisor, CG Supervisor, Model Supervisor) and other departments at an advanced level to execute the desired look of complicated CG assets, including complex creatures and/or hard surface models and environments.  

  • Set up and suggest asset workflows per asset needs. 

  • In absence of Model Supervisor, assume leadership role over Model team and liaise with production team on schedules and bids. 

  • Participate as a team member in determining various design solutions; provide feedback to other members of the team by attending dailies on a regular basis.

  • Mentor artists of all levels within the department through a series of training modules set by Model Leadership.

  • Maintain or exceed a consistent level of productivity and produce high quality work in a timely manner.

To be a contributing member of this team, you will have a mix of these skills:

  • Strong knowledge of industry standard software including Zbrush, Maya, and facial development experience. 

  • 5+ years proven experience creating digital creatures or characters in a feature film or production environment.

  • Understanding of LINUX is a necessity as to navigate through ILM’s production pipeline

  • Experience working from 3D scans and/or 2D artwork.

  • Portfolio demonstrating traditional artistic skills including illustration, and sculptural abilities a plus.

  • Knowledge of face shapes, flex shapes and correctives advantageous 

  • An understanding of the human form/anatomy and structure/silhouette in respect of modeling.

  • Experience in modeling within Houdini is a plus.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts or equivalent with a strong traditional art foundations: including but not limited to figure drawing, concept art and illustration.

  • 5 - 8 years relevant experience (2-3 years prior experience as Model Lead).

  • Collaborative, team-player attitude: open and receptive to new ideas, constructive criticism, direction and changes.

  • Proficiency with LINUX/UNIX is required.

  • Bidding and scheduling experience is preferred.
