Image Engine is seeking a Mid Lighting Technical Director (TD) to deliver high-quality lighting shots efficiently. The role involves applying notes from Lighting Leads, managing time effectively, and troubleshooting problems. The Lighting TD will also be involved in quality checking their own work, assisting senior artists, and participating in team meetings. Responsibilities include applying client notes, communicating team successes and challenges, taking direction from leads to realize shot vision, collaborating with compositing teams, ensuring continuity across shots and sequences, lighting various shot types with consistent mood and color, managing time to meet targets, and promoting interdepartmental collaboration.
Must have:
  • 3+ years experience in lighting digital VFX for film or commercials
  • Good understanding of photography and film
  • Thorough understanding of linear color-space workflow
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to balance quick turnaround with quality
  • Strong artistic eye for cinematography, composition, and photography
Good to have:
  • Understanding of raytracing renderers (Cycles, Eevee, PRMan RIS, Vray, Arnold)
  • Some scripting ability in Python
  • Understanding of basic CG shading mechanisms
  • Ability to demonstrate photo-real shots
  • Aptitude for technical workflow challenges
  • Strong knowledge of lighting workflow best practices
  • Understanding of digital film compositing principles

Job Details

Position: Lighting TD - Mid

Hiring Range: $80,000 to $100,000/year for a 40 hour work week

Project Contract: Immediate start - 3 to 6 months contract

POSITION PURPOSE


The Mid Lighter is responsible for delivering high quality shots in a quick and efficient manner. They will apply notes provided by the Lighting Leads. They will manage their time effectively to ensure tasks are completed within the assigned timeframe and to the specifications requested by Image Engine clients. They will take on shots in varying levels of complexity. They will identify and troubleshoot problems as needed and will ask for assistance when necessary to ensure effective use of time and resources. They will begin quality checking their own work and assisting Senior artists to develop new concepts and approaches to improve work quality. They will participate in all team meetings when necessary. 

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Apply client notes to all lighting shots with minimal guidance
  • Communicate successes and challenges faced by the team to the Lighting Lead
  • Take direction from the Lighting Lead to help realize the vision of the shots through the lighting team
  • Work with the Composting team members to achieve high quality complex composites
  • Ensure continuity is upheld across shots and sequences
  • Light multiple types of shot ensuring consistency in lighting, colour balance and mood between the various elements of the shot or scene
  • Manage time and resources to meet weekly targets
  • Promote interdepartmental collaboration


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

 

  • 3+ years’ experience in Lighting digital VFX for film or commercials
  • Good understanding of photography and film, and how the interactions of light, lenses and film emulsions go to make up the image
  • Thorough understanding of a linear color-space workflow
  • Excellent attention to detail when finalizing, approving or quality controlling shots
  • Ability to balance quick turnaround while achieving a high degree of aesthetic quality



SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Technical skills

  • Understanding of a raytracing renderer such as Cycles, Eevee, PRMan RIS, Vray or Arnold
  • Some scripting ability in Python is an asset
  • Understanding of basic CG shading mechanisms (not at scripting level), render passes and arbitrary outputs.
  • Ability to demonstrate photo-real shots/sequences created with your own light rigs and setups
  • Strong aptitude for technical workflow challenges such as directory structure, file formats, naming conventions, scripts, automation tools, automated dailies, etc.
  • Strong knowledge of lighting workflow and lighting application best practices
  • Traditional skills as a strong artistic eye for cinematography, composition, photography and high-resolution detail, as well as a good understanding of the principles of digital film compositing such as multi-pass rendering for composite-based control
