The Product Inspection function is seeking a Manager to lead a team of inspection engineers and technicians, managing advanced measurement technologies and facilities. The role involves leading and motivating the team, ensuring EH&S and QMS compliance, representing PHINIA at customer and supplier meetings, monitoring progress against targets, defining priorities, and managing resources. Key responsibilities include overseeing engineering sample inspections, producing reports, supporting financial management, and leading training on specialist equipment. The role requires experience in automotive sectors, precision engineering, and dimensional metrology principles, with a focus on driving continuous improvement and achieving carbon-free goals.

Job purpose

The Product Inspection function provides measurement expertise to support key engineering activities from product performance validation to new product development. We have a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join and lead a diverse team of inspection engineers and technicians, manage state-of-the-art measurement technologies and facilities to support the development of cutting-edge ICE technology towards achieving carbon-free goal.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and motivate the team, developing career progression and training plans.
  • Identify and lead continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure EH&S and QMS conformance.
  • Represent PHINIA at customers and suppliers. Develop networks at senior and department management level.
  • Represent Product Inspection in Product Team, SMT and gate review meetings.
  • Monitor progress in order to meet department targets, Budget, Resources, Performance metrics and Quality standards.
  • Define and balance priorities and resolve conflicts in timely manner.
  • Ensure risk escalation is correctly executed in the team.
  • Manage & Develop Product Inspection resource to satisfy business needs.
  • Carry out Engineering sample inspection (Pre and post validation activities).
  • Produce required output (i.e. report/dataset).
  • Support department financial management.
  • Lead training of specialist inspection and metrology equipment.

Ensure equipment is serviced and calibrated on time and to specification.

What we’re looking for

  • Experience of management of a small team and ability to manage a large number of projects in parallel.
  • Experience of lab management.
  • Proven experience in automotive sectors and precision engineering. Knowledge of diesel common rail fuel injection systems, test environments and diesel engines.
  • Solid fundamental understanding of dimensional metrology principles and best practices.
  • Proven experience with surface finish measurement.
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T specifications.
  • Experience with visual and imaging inspection technologies, contact and optical 3D metrology equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience working with customers and communicating at all levels.
  • Experience working in cross-functional teams to meet company business objectives.
  • Available for travelling (customers, suppliers, other PHINIA sites).
  • Attention to detail and data driven mindset, experience in applying design for inspection and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with writing measurement programme and process automation.
  • Programming skills using Matlab, Python and VBA.
  • Excellent communication skills to all level and interpersonal skills.
  • To be a self-starter, self-motivated and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Solid problem-solving skills. Ability to identify risks and escalate as appropriate.
  • Ability to work under pressure willing to go the extra mile.
  • Drive 5S and workplace organisation implementation.
