The Post-Production Manager will manage the post-production operations for Opinion Video, including video technology, editors, data, and workflows. This involves managing a team of editors, overseeing projects, managing deadlines, ensuring brand consistency, and collaborating with other departments. Responsibilities include managing career development, performance reviews, and recruitment for the team. This also includes managing templates, graphics, software systems, and archival footage storage. The manager will also establish workflows, train the team, stay updated with the latest technology, source and hire freelancers, and enforce protocols. The role requires a strong understanding of journalistic independence and a commitment to the mission of seeking truth and helping people understand the world. This is a hybrid position in New York City.
Must have:
  • 5+ years experience in journalism or relevant organization managing operations and video post-production
  • 2+ years of experience managing direct reports
  • Experience managing post-production work, improving department effectiveness
  • Experience displaying analytical planning and project management
Good to have:
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-moving news environment
  • Knowledge of The Times' digital video competitors and the video landscape

Opinion Video is hiring a Temporary Post-Production Manager to manage our post-production operation that includes our video technology, video editors, data and workflows for our growing team. We acquire short films. We make digital and interactive videos. We have an ambitious vertical video team and publish multiple podcast videos every week. In short: There is a lot of data and systems; staff and freelance editors in our daily operation. You will work across video formats on different projects managing different post-production tasks.

This is a hybrid position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. 

Responsibilities:

  • Manage post-production team for video podcasts: manage career development, feedback & performance reviews
  • Manage and support your direct reports, including recruiting
  • Prioritize and oversee operational projects including managing deadlines, creating execution roadmaps and coordinating with other departments
  • Manage templates, graphics and software systems to ensure brand consistency
  • Partner on post-production budgetary needs including technology, tools & hiring
  • Set appropriate workflow and systems for managing post-production
  • Establish a system for footage coming in from the field 
  • Manage archival footage storage, including oversight, maintenance and development of media asset management system
  • Build in training and one-sheeters for the team around post-production workflows and tools
  • Stay up to date with the latest technology for post-production; bring forward solutions to the team
  • Source and hire of freelance editors, associate editors, translators and production assistants
  • Establish, communicate and enforce protocols
  • Standardize tracking system of freelancers including a roster and rate sheet, and oversight
  • Oversee management of all data across all five pillars of Opinion Video
  • Support post-production including color and sound needs, and technical maintenance
  • Collaborate with our technology and infrastructure teams to maintain technology.
  • Manage Opinion Video's annual process for journalism contests; coordinate with external and our teams to bring together nominations, manage expectations and strategize on the best approach
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to Deputy Editor, Opinion Video

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years experience in journalism or other relevant organization managing operations and video post-production 
  • 2+ years of experience managing direct reports
  • Experience managing post production work, including setting up, overseeing and improving systems to increase department effectiveness
  • Demonstrated experience displaying analytical planning and project management, including the ability to identify strategic issues, frame and analyze problems in a structured way, and develop and implement solutions
  • Experience with project management tools (eg. Airtable) and with video production tools (eg. Adobe, Resolve, Mimir)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-moving news environment, and stay calm in high-pressure situations
  • Knowledge of The Times' digital video competitors and the video landscape
