Job Description

The Production Supervisor will lead daily Shop Operations, ensuring smooth manufacturing processes and furthering organizational success. This role involves communicating business goals, solving problems, and executing objectives for a team of welders, assemblers, and machine operators. The supervisor will promote excellence in productivity, customer service, quality, and EHS, manage the facility within budget, and coordinate with various departments to meet production demands and customer requirements. This position is part of Aero Transportation Products (ATP), a Wabtec Corporation business, supporting the Agriculture and Industrial arena in the rail industry.
Must have:
  • Lead daily Shop Operations functions under guidance of the Plant Manager.
  • Promote a working environment for excellence in productivity, customer service, quality, and EHS.
  • Assign and direct work priorities for hourly production workers to achieve daily and weekly production goals.
  • Drive initiatives to maximize employee contribution and improve product quality and services.
  • Ensure all services support functions at facility are staffed and well trained.
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct Operations and Services functions at the facility.
  • Lead efforts to develop and implement plans to meet customers’ requirements for product quality, cost, and delivery.
  • Manage the facility within operating budget.
  • Initiate and influence integration of EHS policies and practices into the business.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of applicable EHS regulatory requirements.
  • Work with consultants and contractors on related EHS issues.
  • Conduct EHS education programs as needed and required.
  • Provide and determine alternatives for issue resolution.
  • Interface with production, sales, purchasing, and suppliers to schedule raw material receipt.
  • Coordinate with Material Buyers for raw material scheduling.
  • Establish plant production schedules that coincide with raw material scheduling.
  • Drive resolution on all manufacturing material quality and supply issues.
  • Assure the shop has necessary materials, configuration records, manpower, and tooling.
  • Identify and react to material plans that do not meet customer requirements.
  • Prepare and implement work orders and plans for assigned commodities.
  • Adhere to all safety and housekeeping standards established by the Company and regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly workplace.

Who are we?

We are Aero Transportation Products (ATP), a business organization, part of the larger Wabtec Corporation. Established in 1979 and purchased by Wabtec in 2017, our organization has supported the Agriculture and Industrial arena as an innovator in the rail industry for 45 years. We have designed and built products that both feed and house everyone throughout North America and are working on new products for applications in Europe and beyond.

Who will you be working with?

This position is part of ATP, which includes sites located in Independence, MO and in McPherson, KS. Our Independence site is based in an underground industrial complex customized for Fiberglass production. The McPherson site is a metal fabrication and weld shop, in the picturesque setting of America's Heartland. The ATP team is comprised of a diverse group from varying backgrounds, all motivated by an enjoyable and positive work culture. ATP team members primarily support the production of fiberglass, and aluminum hatch covers and mild and stainless-steel outlet gates for Wabtec’s Freight Components division.

The Production Supervisor will demonstrate leadership in communicating business goals, programs, and processes for an area or business segment. In this role you will utilize your experience or expertise to solve problems, develop and execute objectives for self and others, and impact short-term and long-term business goals. You will be responsible for a team of welders, assemblers, and machine operators, ensuring that the manufacturing processes run smoothly and further the organization’s success. You will report to the Plant Manager and General Manager.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college preferred. HS Diploma or GED Equivalent and supervisory experience in management or team leadership.
  • Previous experience with Oracle based computer software
  • Proficient with MS Office suite
  • Experience in manufacturing environment and/or logistics
  • Strong Customer Service Skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize needs of the site and department
  • Strong communication skills
  • Preferred experience in managing hourly employees
  • Rail industry experience a plus
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal and leadership skills
  • The ability to drive growth and change in a fast-moving, high-energy environment.
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing processes
  • Knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety regulations
  • Ability to lead others through conflicts or disagreements.
  • Willingness to drive accountability to those under them.
  • Welding (MIG and TIG) and Machine Operations experience is a plus but not required.

What will your typical day look like?

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for leading daily Shop Operations functions under guidance of the Plant Manager

  • Assign and direct work priorities for hourly production workers to achieve daily and weekly production goals.
  • Drive initiatives to maximize employee contribution and drive improvements in product quality and services while ensuring all services support functions at facility are staffed and well trained to perform their duties effectively.
  • Responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing Operations and Services functions at the facility under the guidance of the Plant Manager while leading the effort to develop and implement plans to meet customers’ requirements for product quality, cost and delivery.
  • Responsible for managing the facility within operating budget.
  • Initiate and influence integration of EHS policies and practices into the business.
  • Maintain an in-depth knowledge of applicable EHS regulatory requirements, and work with consultants and contractors on related EHS issues.
  • Conduct EHS education programs as needed and required and provide and determine alternatives for issue resolution.
  • Interface with production, sales, purchasing and suppliers in order to schedule the receipt of raw material to meet production demand to include coordinating with Material Buyers for raw material scheduling.
  • Establish plant production schedules that coincide with raw material scheduling and drive resolution on all manufacturing material quality and supply issues.
  • Assure that the shop has the necessary materials, configuration records, manpower, and tooling to meet required production levels.
  • Identify and react to material plans that do not meet customer requirements.
  • Prepare and implement work orders and plans as required for assigned commodities to meet the requirements of the business.
  • Other duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand and walk, potentially for extended periods of time. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and color vision. While performing the duties of this job travel will not be required under normal circumstances, but the ability to travel is desirable, at times internationally.
