Job Summary
J.S. Held is seeking a Professional Engineer for its Vehicle Accident Reconstruction office. The role involves forensic engineering analysis of cases related to roadway defects or issues contributing to crashes. Candidates should have a strong background in roadway construction/design, drainage expertise, and an aptitude for evaluating roadway plans and physical defects. Responsibilities include field investigations, technical findings, and client communication in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Must Have
- Provide forensic engineering analysis of cases involving roadway defects or roadway issues.
- Analyze roadway plans, daily work reports, specifications, and other documents.
- Conduct field investigations including surveys and photographs.
- Provide technical findings, analysis, and conclusions.
- Travel for field work.
- Maintain communication with client and project team.
- Maintain technical and professional knowledge.
- Continuously meet or exceed assigned performance metrics and goals.
- Licensed Professional Engineer
- Minimum 2 to 5 years experience in traffic signalization, roadway construction and/or roadway design.
- Advanced Training in Maintenance of Traffic.
- Working knowledge and experience with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Working knowledge and experience with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide on Geometric Design.
- Intimate knowledge of a Department of Transportation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Mathematically and technologically inclined.
- Skilled with software and technical systems.
- Willingness and ability to obtain additional licensure and certification.
- Ability to work remotely or while travelling.
- Must be able to travel to different regions.
Good to Have

- Public speaking experience is desirable.

Job Description
JS Held’s Forensic engineering practice is seeking a Professional Engineer for its Vehicle Accident Reconstruction office. The ideal candidate for this position has a strong background in roadway construction and/or design. Drainage installation and/or modeling (hydrology and hydraulics) expertise is emphasized. Other areas of experience and knowledge that would be beneficial is roadway maintenance, asphalt paving, traffic signalization and Maintenance of Traffic. Candidates should have an aptitude for evaluating roadway plans, contractual requirements, specifications, and applicable standards as well as physical roadway defects such as pavement failure, ponding water, shoulder edge drop-offs, intersection site distances, and temporary traffic control deficiencies.
Candidates should feel comfortable working in a fast-paced and collaborative consulting environment which requires a high degree of self-motivation, professionalism, organization, responsiveness, and resilience to stress.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Provide forensic engineering analysis of cases involving roadway defects or roadway issues that may be a contributory cause to a crash or an incident.
- Assist clients and other team members with cases involving roadway issues that may be related to a vehicle crash or bicycle/pedestrian incident.
- Analyze roadway plans, daily work reports, specifications, and other documents that may pertain to a vehicle accident or other event associated with a litigation matter, such as a drowning or a fall.
- Conduct field investigations including surveys and photographs.
- Provide technical findings, analysis, and conclusions, either verbally or in writing, in a timely fashion and in laymen’s terms.
- Travel for field work.
- Maintain communication with client and project team on status and scope of assigned projects.
- Maintain technical and professional knowledge related to your practice area(s) through attending continuing education courses and workshops, attending industry/practice related seminars, reviewing relevant scientific and professional publications, and participating in professional organizations and societies.
- Continuously meet or exceed assigned performance metrics and goals.
Qualifications
- Licensed Professional Engineer
- A minimum of 2 to 5 years experience in traffic signalization, roadway construction and/or roadway design
- Advanced Training in Maintenance of Traffic (aka Temporary Traffic Control)
- Working knowledge and experience with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Working knowledge and experience with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Guide on Geometric Design
- Intimate knowledge of a Department of Transportation including their policies, practices, and applicable
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; public speaking experience is desirable
- Strong organizational skills and attitude to deliver results
- Mathematically and technologically inclined with the ability to adapt to new environments or scenarios quickly
- Skilled with software and technical systems
- Willingness and ability to obtain additional licensure and certification as needed
- Willingness to develop into a testifying Expert
- Willingness to train and learn the field of crash reconstruction
- Ability to work remotely or while travelling to different job sites. (reliable cellular service, access to high-speed data, etc.)
- Must be able to travel to different regions. (have reliable transportation, etc.)
- Willingness and desire to work above and beyond the minimum performance and goal requirements

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $100,000- $150,000. Any offered salary range is based on a wide array of factors including but not limited to skillset, experience, training, location, scope of role, management responsibility, etc.
