The Role:
Morningstar is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Quantitative Analyst to join our Risk Analytics team. This role is central to the development, maintenance, and enhancement of our proprietary Risk Model applications, such as the Morningstar Portfolio Risk Score. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure our models remain robust, insightful, and aligned with clients’ investment workflows. A successful candidate will have impeccable interpersonal and communications skills, a solid quantitative mindset, and a strong understanding of finance.
Job responsibilities:
- Design, implement, and maintain Risk Model applications used across Morningstar’s platforms, ensuring accuracy, scalability, and performance.
- Model maintenance: build and maintain clean, well-documented notebooks and workflows to facilitate model updates, reproducibility, and ongoing assessment of model efficacy.
- Methodology research: research and develop new methodologies to improve model quality or expand coverage. Conduct rigorous testing and analysis to validate model outputs and ensure consistency with expectations.
- Stakeholder Support: act as a subject matter expert for internal teams and external clients, providing clear and timely responses to inquiries related to model behavior, assumptions, and outputs.
Requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree in quantitative or financial discipline (master's or higher is desirable)
- Minimum 1 year of experience in software engineering or finance
- Strong programming skills in Python and SQL.
- Solid understanding of financial markets and risk modeling techniques. Experience with Morningstar’s mutual fund, fixed income, and equity databases is a plus.
- Intermediate knowledge of statistical methods
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain complex quantitative concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
- Meet strict deadlines and juggle various tasks while maintaining excellent attention to detail and impeccable accuracy in running and proofing analysis
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment, while also taking ownership of projects independently with minimal supervision
