Job Description

As a Senior Concept Artist at Glowmade, you will play a pivotal role in the development of King of Meat, a multiplayer cooperative dungeon game. Responsibilities include researching, generating, and iterating on designs for characters, environments, weapons, and various game assets. You will collaborate closely with the Art Lead and team, contributing visuals across various aspects of game production, from environments and props to VFX and marketing materials. Mentoring junior artists and working with outsourcing vendors are also key aspects of the role. The ideal candidate possesses strong architectural and mechanical design skills, excels at balancing aesthetics and functionality, and has experience in a fast-paced production environment.

Hello, we’re Glowmade! (Hi!) We’re an exciting independent company, based in Guildford, in the UK! (Hi again!) 

We make games that strive to unlock people's imagination and help them express themselves in wonderful, fun ways!
Right now we’re busy working on King of Meat, our new multiplayer cooperative game, wrapped up in a delicious, user-generated blanket of dungeon madness!

This is an opportunity to play a pivotal role in our expanding team. Reporting to our Art Lead, you’ll be working closely with them and the rest of the team to research, generate ideas, and iterate on designs for characters, environments, weapons, vending machines, gumball traps, wipe clean shield covers, and things you find in horrible little dark corners…etc etc (you know the stuff!) 


From day one we would like you to…

  • Jump enthusiastically into understanding what the game is and get to know its creative and artistic direction.
  • Master your knowledge on every aspect of the game, player costumes, weapons, props, different environments and game mechanics present in the game.
  • Be able to generate creative and fun ideas that are in tone with the humour and style of the game.
  • Be a team player - always ready to not only receive, but also give constructive feedback to other members of the Art Team and beyond!.

In six months you will be…

  • A central member of the Art Team, contributing visuals to all aspects of the games we produce. These might include visualising large environments, decorative and functional props, VFX exploration, even marketing materials, expanding the direction from the Art Director and Lead Artist.
  • Visualize and produce gameplay focused assets, following technical requirements and working together with the Game Design team.
  • Support and mentor the other concept artists, being a role model for the rest of the team.
  • Contribute to the development of 3D assets with proactive and constructive feedback towards other Art Team members.
  • Be hands on with the outsourcing vendors, supporting production with feedback and guidance.

Requirements

The ideal candidate would:

  • Have a hungry imagination! 
  • Have a strong architectural and mechanical design knowledge, with experience designing complex architectural structures like buildings, large open spaces and enclosed environments.
  • Be able to balance aesthetics and functionality when designing weapons, armour and costumes for our games, while maintaining a push for innovative and creative ideas that fits within the game lore and narrative.
  • Have experience mentoring other artists, guiding them with hands on feedback sharing pipeline tips.
  • Is experienced working with external outsourcing vendors.
  • Strong communicational skills and understanding of various art disciplines.
  • Be able to work within a high speed production environment timeframe, being accountable for their tasks and respecting deadlines.

About The Company

We are in many ways a typical UK based games company. Our three founders all worked together at Lionhead, made some half decent stuff, got on well, shared stories, shared a dream - well you know the kind of thing. The key catalyst had been the combination of their core skillsets - code, design and art - the essence of games creation.

To this nucleus, we have gradually added people with complementary abilities such as character creation, UI, animation, systems coding, consumer insight, marketing and studio representation. Now, as a growing company, we have a team that has been lucky to work on some great games for some great companies, but we want to do more.

Any company’s culture will develop over time, especially when growing organically as we are right now. We have, however, from the very start wanted to have a vision with clear creative guidelines. These are, in no particular order, inclusivity, creativity, exploration, community and surprise. That is not to say we are all pink and fluffy. We like looking under rocks, scaring ourselves and generally challenging the expected. And we are working hard to bring these facets into everything we do with the belief that by doing so we will make the best games we possibly can.
