We are seeking a talented Hardware Engineer to join our R&D team in Berlin. This role focuses on the design and development of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and control electronics for advanced photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and tunable lasers. You will be responsible for schematic design, layout, and evaluation board development, supporting prototyping, testing, and product qualification.
Principle duties and essential functions
- Design transceiver and optical sub-assembly PCBs and control boards for photonic ICs and tunable lasers, including schematic capture, layout, and component selection.
- Develop evaluation boards for electrical and optical characterization of photonic devices.
- Perform electromagnetic simulations using tools such as HFSS and SiWave to validate high-speed RF designs.
- Optimize designs for signal integrity, power integrity, thermal performance, and EMI/EMC compliance.
- Collaborate with photonics, packaging, and test teams to ensure seamless integration, easy validation and system-level performance.
- Support product qualification activities, including electrical and environmental stress testing.
- Interface with suppliers and manufacturing partners for PCB fabrication and assembly.
- Maintain detailed documentation of designs, revisions, and test results.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of design practices and components library maintenance.
Knowledge, skills and experience required
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or related field.
- 3+ years of experience in PCB and control board design, preferably in optoelectronics or photonics.
- Proficiency with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, Mentor Graphics).
- Strong understanding of electromagnetics, analog/digital mixed-signal design, high-speed layout, and power management.
- Hands-on experience with HFSS or similar electromagnetic simulation tools.
- Experience with control electronics for tunable lasers, modulators, or photonic ICs is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with lab equipment for board bring-up and testing.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Fluent in English; German is a plus.
