The Journals Growth Manager is crucial for expanding Springer Nature's journal presence, primarily in Greater China. This role involves establishing a sustainable framework for journal growth across business units, aligning execution plans with strategic targets, developing market-specific growth plans, and driving performance in content retention, editor/reviewer engagement, and institutional outreach. The manager will support the Journals Growth Director in developing and delivering growth strategy for China and other key research markets, focusing on open access portfolios.

Must Have

  • Help to develop and maintain institutional partnerships to benefit journals at scale.
  • Monitor local policy shifts, institutional behaviours, and competitor activity.
  • Lead strategic projects related to China’s journal ranking, warning, and indexing systems.

About The Role

The Journals Growth Manager plays a key role in expanding Springer Nature’s journal presence in key research markets, with a primary focus on Greater China. Reporting to the Journals Growth Director, the role is responsible for establishing a coordinated and sustainable framework for journal growth across multiple business units, both within and beyond Research Publishing. The immediate priorities include aligning Execution Plans with strategic targets, developing clear market-specific growth plans, and driving performance in high-impact areas such as Content Retention, Editor and Reviewer Engagement, and Institutional Outreach.

Responsibilities:

Part of the Research Publishing Strategy team, the Journals Growth Manager is responsible for supporting the Journals Growth Director to develop and deliver growth strategy for China and other key research markets such as India. The role has a focus on driving growth in Springer Nature’s open access portfolios. Activities include:

Drive Execution of strategy

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across the business to ensure we continue to drive growth and meet the needs of researchers in China, including through improved content retention, better editor engagement, and stronger researcher and institutional outreach.
  • Implement data-driven strategies to optimize Key Performance Indicators (submissions, acceptance rates, peer-review and Turnaround Times) while aligning with local market dynamics, working with colleagues to address any global processes or bottlenecks impacting these.
  • Under the leadership of the Director, coordinate 360-degree review meetings with global and local stakeholders to track growth initiatives, identify growth drivers, and recommend strategic improvements.

Engagement and Outreach

  • Drive strategic collaboration with priority external partners, including through targeted acquisition of external editors/EBMs, to enhance journal visibility, impact and performance.
  • Help to develop and maintain institutional partnerships to benefit journals at scale.
  • Work collaboratively with marketing teams to understand and align specific activities to a common local strategy and ensure alignment with local editorial initiatives.
  • Represent Springer Nature at external conferences and visits. Actively support the planning and delivery of local initiatives such as journal summits.

Policy and Intelligence

  • Monitor local policy shifts, institutional behaviours, and competitor activity.​ Continually share insights with global teams to shape and inform their strategy.
  • Lead strategic projects related to China’s journal ranking, warning, and indexing systems, including data analysis, stakeholder coordination, and response development to ensure strong portfolio positioning.

General

  • Provide bespoke analysis and recommendations for the Journals Growth Strategy in key research markets.
  • Contribute to internal capability building by sharing market insights, best practices, and training resources across publishing teams.
  • Participate in strategic publishing projects, distilling information and data into proposals for senior management.
  • Offer local operational support and local insights to global research publishing teams as necessary.

Experience:

  • STM journal publishing
  • Customer facing

  • Strong stakeholder management skills and proven ability to navigate complex matrix environments.
