Job Description

We are seeking a Society Transition and Operations Manager to join Springer Nature. This pivotal role involves leading the onboarding and project management of new partnership journals, ensuring a seamless transition into Springer Nature’s systems. The manager will also oversee offboarding, acquisitions, and transition projects, driving them to meet timelines and strategic goals. Key responsibilities include managing transitions, project management, stakeholder communication, documentation, risk management, continuous improvement, and reporting.
Must have:
  • Managing the transition and onboarding processes of new partnership journal titles
  • Running journal acquisition and transition projects on behalf of the stakeholder business teams
  • Serving as a central point of contact and ensuring clear communication between stakeholders
  • Ensuring that processes, guidelines, and relevant information are well-documented
  • Identifying potential challenges, developing mitigation strategies, and adapting to unforeseen circumstances
  • Looking for opportunities to streamline processes and improve procedures
  • Providing full and effective reporting of acquisition and transition project progress
  • Previous demonstrable project management experience
  • Change management experience
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders, build relationships, and manage expectations
  • Understanding the specific landscape of scholarly publishing, editorial processes, and Open Access initiatives
  • Capacity to identify issues, develop solutions, and adjust strategies as needed during transitions
Good to have:
  • Formal project management training or certification (e.g. PRINCE2, Agile, PMP)

About The Role

We are seeking a Society Transition and Operations Manager to join Springer Nature. In this pivotal position, you’ll lead the onboarding and project management of new partnership journals, ensuring a smooth transition into Springer Nature’s systems. You’ll also oversee offboarding, acquisitions, and transition projects driving them forward to meet timelines and deliver strategic goals.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Managing the transition and onboarding processes of new partnership journal titles from contract signature to journal running business as usual.
  • Project management: Running journal acquisition and transition projects on behalf of the stakeholder business teams, following best-practice methodology.
  • Communication and stakeholder management: Serving as a central point of contact and ensuring clear communication between the society, Springer Nature, transferring or receiving publishers, and other stakeholders (internal stakeholders include SPM, Publishing, Production, GPO, Marketing, Publishing Performance and Intelligence, Peer-review).
  • Documentation and knowledge transfer: Ensuring that processes, guidelines, and relevant information are well-documented. Pulling together FAQs and narratives on the transition process best practices.
  • Risk management: Identifying potential challenges, developing mitigation strategies, and adapting to unforeseen circumstances during transitions.
  • Continuous improvement: Looking for opportunities to streamline processes and improve procedures relating to journal acquisition and transitions.
  • Reporting: Providing full and effective reporting of acquisition and transition project progress, following agreed program-wide standards.

Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

Essential

  • Previous demonstrable project management experience
  • Change management experience
  • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: The ability to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders, build relationships, and manage expectations.
  • Publishing Industry Knowledge: Understanding the specific landscape of scholarly publishing, editorial processes, and Open Access initiatives.
  • Problem-solving and adaptability: The capacity to identify issues, develop solutions, and adjust strategies as needed during transitions.

Desirable

  • Formal project management training or certification (e.g. PRINCE2, Agile, PMP) would be desirable.
