Job Description

This Software Engineer 2 role in San Jose, CA, involves developing software components and services across various technology stacks, analyzing user problems to create prototypes, and collaborating with architects to guide the technical vision of the Observability team. The engineer will also work on evaluating and adopting a scalable, reliable, and fault-tolerant Observability Platform, automating maintenance, and troubleshooting performance issues in a time-critical environment.
Must Have:
  • Develop software components and services built on different technology stacks and Operations Systems.
  • Work closely with users to analyze problems and transform them into product solution prototypes.
  • Collaborate with architects to guide the technical vision and direction of the Observability team.
  • Collaborate with other engineers on code reviews, internal infrastructure improvements, and process enhancements.
  • Understand use cases for Observability Domain and guide evaluation/adoption of a next-generation Observability Platform.
  • Assist with evaluation using Proof of Concept on selected options/solutions.
  • Ensure minimal operational overhead by automating maintenance tasks and solving scalability bottlenecks.
  • Design, implement, and test complex, multi-tier distributed software application frameworks.
  • Troubleshoot and help fix performance, scalability, and other live issues.
  • Isolate errors by trouble-shooting the application stack from application to framework to underlying infrastructure dependencies and network.
  • Master’s degree plus two years of experience or Bachelor’s degree plus five years of experience in a related occupation.
  • 2+ years experience developing large-scale software applications using Java (minimum version 11).
  • 2+ years experience designing and developing microservices, Rest APIs, batch jobs, and schedulers using Spring IOC, AOP and Spring Boot.
  • 2+ years experience creating user interfaces using JavaScript, Vue.js, jQuery, jQueryUI, and AJAX.
  • 2+ years experience integrating applications and establishing data pipelines using Apache Kafka.
  • 2+ years experience developing and maintaining a log-based pipeline using the ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) architecture.
  • 2+ years experience optimizing performance and query tuning for Oracle Relational Databases.
  • 1+ year experience utilizing Redis as a messaging service.

Job Duties: Develop software components and services built on different technology stacks and Operations Systems, using build and deploy pipelines to add new features and fix issues. Work closely with the users of the system to analyze their problems and transform them into product solution prototypes. Collaborate with architects to guide the technical vision and direction of the Observability team. Collaborate with other engineers on code reviews, internal infrastructure improvements, and process enhancements. Understand the different use cases for the Observability Domain across the different teams and help guide the evaluation and adoption of a next-generation Observability Platform for PayPal that is scalable, reliable, and fault tolerant. Assist with evaluation using Proof of Concept on the different options/solutions selected that should solve all the use cases. Ensure minimal operational overhead by automating maintenance tasks with easily manageable configurations, solving scalability bottlenecks to improve performance, and maximizing system availability by ensuring functional and performance SLAs {Service Level Agreements). Design, implement, and test complex, multi-tier distributed software application frameworks collaboratively with peers and technical leaders. Troubleshoot and help fix performance, scalability, and other live issues in a very time­ critical environment. Isolate errors by trouble-shooting the application stack from application to framework to underlying infrastructure dependencies and network. Partial telecommuting permitted from within a commutable distance.

Minimum Requirements: Master’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field plus two years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation. Employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering, or a closely related field plus five years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.

Special Skill Requirements:

1. Experience developing large-scale software applications based on Object-Oriented principles using Java (minimum version 11) as the programming language (2 years).

2. Experience designing and developing microservices, Rest APIs, batch jobs, and schedulers using Spring IOC, AOP and Spring Boot (2 years).

3. Experience creating user interfaces using JavaScript, Vue.js, jQuery, jQueryUI, and AJAX (2 years).

4. Experience integrating applications and establishing data pipelines using Apache Kafka as the messaging platform (2 years).

5. Experience developing and maintaining a log-based pipeline using the ELK (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) architecture for logging and monitoring (2 years).

6. Experience optimizing performance and query tuning for Oracle Relational Databases (2 years).

7. Experience utilizing Redis as a messaging service to enhance performance and scalability (1 year).
