WTMJ, the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is seeking a Sports Director. This leadership role is non-traditional, focusing on pushing boundaries across all platforms and tapping into major sports stories. The ideal candidate is a sports enthusiast with expertise in digital and social media, excited about Milwaukee's offerings. This is not an entry-level position, aiming to refresh local news sports in a major league city.
Good To Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline or equivalent years of experience.
  • Generally 3-5+ years of experience.
Must Have:
  • Develop story ideas from assignments or leads.
  • Gather and verify factual information for stories.
  • Write stories following editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Perform on-air in pre-recorded and live situations.
  • Work cooperatively with assigned photographers.
  • Post stories and videos to digital platforms and social media sites.
  • Represent the station at community events.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of editorial judgment, journalistic ethics, and libel laws.
  • Possess computer literacy, including newsroom computer systems, videography, and non-linear editing experience.
  • Have knowledge of broadcast-quality camera equipment and video systems.
  • Exhibit strong broadcast and AP style writing skills.
  • Be proficient at posting content to various websites and social media sites.
  • Be self-motivated and able to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Hold a valid driver's license, good driving record, and proof of insurance with company's required limits.

The Sports Director will turn content daily, while leading the team into the next evolution of local sports. This is not a traditional sports role. We’re searching for someone who can push the boundaries on all platforms and tap into the big sports stories of the day. We are searching for a sports enthusiast who’s an expert in digital and social media and is excited about everything Milwaukee has to offer. WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Receive assignments or evaluate sports leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
  • Gather and verify factual information regarding stories.
  • Organize material and write stories according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
  • Shoot video and still photos to illustrate stories.
  • Edit, or assist in editing, videos for all multimedia platforms.
  • Be on-air in pre-recorded and live situations.
  • Work cooperatively with photographers assigned to stories, if one is assigned.
  • Post stories and videos to digital platforms and social media sites.
  • Represent the station at community events.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline preferred or equivalent years of experience

WHAT YOU'LL BRING:

  • Knowledge and demonstration of editorial judgment, journalistic ethics, and libel laws
  • Generally, 3 - 5+ years of experience preferred
  • Computer literacy required, including newsroom computer systems; videography and non-linear editing experience.
  • Knowledge of broadcast-quality camera equipment
  • Knowledge of video systems
  • Strong broadcast and AP style writing skills
  • Proficient at posting content to various websites and social media sites
