Job Summary

Job Description

This internship at NXP's power conversion systems team focuses on extending the design of a bi-directional CLLC converter to include a 48V/20A output. The intern will redesign the secondary part of the converter, including interfaces for an FPGA board, aiming for approximately 1kW output power. Responsibilities involve gathering requirements, architectural development, simulation modeling in system-C-AMS, schematic and PCB design, and testing the converter's operation.
Must have:
  • Gather design requirements for the 48V secondary part of the existing CLLC power converter.
  • Architecture and development of the 48V extension for the CLLC converter.
  • Set up a basic CLLC converter simulation model in system-C-AMS (Coside), including the secondary 48V extension.
  • Work out schematics and PCB design for the (re)design of the CLLC converter with 48V output, including all required interfaces.
  • Test and verify the correct operation of the CLLC converter with the 48V output.
Perks:
  • Development opportunities through on-the-job experiences, learning from industries bests, and education.
  • Access to a diverse team with 51 different nationalities.
  • Participation in social activities like Christmas parties and International Walking Day.
  • Joining the YOUNG community for social and professional events.
  • Participation in Women in NXP initiatives.
  • Opportunities to give back to communities through volunteering and Girls Day.

Your Team

Powering a smarter world is our mission, and we execute it by developing power conversion systems using state-of-the-art solutions and generating innovative concepts for better efficiency, lower cost, and smaller form factors. We are the market leader in resonant AC-DC converters (used in PC, game console, and TV set power supplies) and are expanding further into the automotive onboard charging and high-voltage DC-DC conversion space.

Your Responsibilities and Tasks

Internship goals

The main goal for the student is to extend the current design of the bi-directional CLLC converter with a 48V/20A output. In order to achieve this, the student must redesign the secondary part of the existing converter, including the required interfaces to connect the hardware with a FPGA board (Digilent Eclypse Z7). The secondary side of the converter consists of a full bridge that can be operated as a synchronous rectifier and should be able to deliver approximately 1kW of output power.

The graduation internship includes the following activities:

1. Gather all design requirements for the 48V secondary part of the existing CLLC power converter. Some requirements will come from the already established interfaces between controller and converter. Other requirements might come from the way existing LLC application boards are developed for customers. A lot of knowledge is already available at Smart Power in Nijmegen and Eindhoven. During this gathering phase of the requirements you will interact with the appropriate experts.

2. Architecture and development of the 48V extension for the CLLC converter.

3. Set up of a basic CLLC converter simulation model in system-C-AMS (Coside), including the secondary 48V extension.

4. Work out schematics and PCB design for the (re)design of the CLLC converter with 48V output, including all interfaces required such as level converters and isolation (e.g. isolated gate drivers)

5. Test and verify the correct operation of the CLLC converter with the 48V output. This can be done in incremental steps by connecting the converter with a FPGA board and generating test signals (e.g. gate drives) to verify the analog interfaces.

Prerequisites / what you will learn

Following skills and knowledge you will learn during execution:

  • Linear algebra.
  • State space equations / control theory for real time execution of analog and digital design.
  • State plane averaging to derive small signal model for power control.
  • State plane and state plane decoupling for visualizing the CLLC converter operation.
  • systemC-AMS coding in Coside to build and understand simulation models.
  • C++ programming.
  • PCB design.
  • Test and verification techniques.
