Job Description

Wabtec Corporation is a global provider of equipment, systems, and digital solutions for freight and transit rail. This role is for a Manager, Software Engineering within the Digital Intelligence Offboard Team, focusing on innovative railroad products like Trip Optimizer and My Rail Yard. The manager will build, mentor, and manage a team of software developers, validation engineers, and product owners, fostering continuous improvement and managing workload. The role requires a bachelor's or master’s degree, a minimum of 10 years of technical experience in software engineering, proficiency in Java, and experience with cloud platforms like AWS.

  • A bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of technical experience building production software in a software engineering, DevOps, or architecture role.
  • Proficiency in coding languages such as Java.
  • Solid understanding of the software engineering lifecycle including coding standards, configuration management, deployment, testing, and operations is required.
  • Ability to learn and understand the details of any technical component as well as drive the overall systems architecture.
  • Responsible for day-to-day communications, performance assessment and feedback, career counseling, professional development, employee rewards and recognition, and resolving personnel issues and managing a team.
  • Provide project staffing support with recruiting, interviews and hiring.
  • Responsible for recommending employees for raises and promotions.
  • Provide detailed employee performance feedback, periodic 1-on-1 meetings, annual mid-term, and end of year performance appraisals.
  • Evaluate current project requirements and assure adequate staff.
  • Identify and implement new or improved tools and processes to increase team efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the scrum teams to determine current status of projects.
  • Champion agile methodologies to drive efficient, value-driven delivery.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex technical issues and architectural decisions.
  • Work with product owners on current project requirements.
  • Work with system engineers to refine any requirements and design and determine what new work will be worked on in the near-term future.
  • Push team to finish assignments on time or early.
  • Provide coaching, career pathing, and growth plans for team members.

Who will you be working with?

You’ll be part of the Offboard Team within Digital Intelligence that is responsible for building commercial software solutions in the rail industry. Your Team will work on innovative railroad products – Trip Optimizer, My Rail Yard, and LXA Offboard and several internal tools that monitor the performance of trains and locomotives. Your Team will work with JAVA, Apache Kafka, and relational databases. Your Team will deploy the software on AWS and containerized environments using Docker and Kubernetes. Your team will build state of art user interfaces using Angular JS and HTML.
