Intel Labs is seeking a Photonics Research Intern to join our Photonics Research Lab. This role involves collaborating with researchers on the design, fabrication, and characterization of silicon-based photonics devices for optical communications and sensing applications. The intern will develop measurement and data acquisition techniques, perform optical and electrical testing, and conduct simulation and data analysis. The internship is typically for 6 months, with the possibility of renewal up to 12 months.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Assist in the design and fabrication of silicon-based photonics devices.
Develop and implement techniques for measuring and acquiring data to characterize photonics devices.
Conduct optical and electrical testing, simulation, and data analysis.
Collaborate effectively with researchers and interdisciplinary teams.
Communicate research findings and progress clearly and professionally.
Demonstrate strong communication skills in both written and verbal formats.
Work independently and take initiative in problem-solving and project management.
Adapt to a fast-paced and challenging professional environment, learning quickly and addressing new challenges.
You must possess the below minimum education requirements and minimum required qualifications to be initially considered for this position. Relevant experience can be obtained through schoolwork, classes, project work, internships, and/or military experience. Additional preferred qualifications are in addition to the minimum requirements and are considered a plus factor in identifying top candidates.
Minimum Qualifications:
Pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optical Science, or related fields.
Background in integrated optics and electro-optic devices.
Experience in electrical and optical testing, fiber-to-waveguide optical alignment, and time-domain and frequency domain measurements.
Preferred Qualifications:
Understanding of silicon photonics technology and its applications.
Knowledge of laser physics, semiconductor processing, fiber optics, planar lightwave circuits, and semiconductor physics related to photonic devices.
Familiarity with characterization techniques for high-speed optical components used in fiber optical communications, such as modulators and detectors.
Experience with integrated optics, photonics device simulation and characterization, and data acquisition and analysis software like Lumerical, Cadence, LabView, and Matlab.
