Job Summary
This Acquisitions Editor role in Computer Science at Springer Nature involves managing and growing a high-quality book portfolio in Software Engineering, Information Systems, Databases, and Information Retrieval. The successful candidate will lead new title acquisitions, maintain author relationships, manage proposal evaluation, negotiate contracts, and ensure timely manuscript delivery. The position requires close collaboration with Production, Marketing, and other departments, offering engagement with the academic Computer Science community and representation at international conferences.
Must Have
- Manage a book portfolio of 30-40 titles per year.
- Pursue active acquisitions through email outreach, calls, meetings, and conference participation.
- Review book proposals and work with authors to shape strong project submissions.
- Prepare, negotiate, and execute publishing contracts.
- Ensure timely delivery of manuscripts and support authors.
- Maintain and grow a network of advisors, reviewers, and contributors.
- Serve as the primary contact for authors in the assigned subject area.
- Maintain regular communication with authors.
- Collaborate with editorial colleagues to coordinate programme strategy.
- Represent Springer Nature at relevant conferences and events.
- Work closely with Production, Marketing, and Promotion teams.
- Provide input on marketing initiatives and ensure strong positioning of titles.
- Coordinate with internal teams to resolve workflow, timelines, and portfolio development questions.
- BA or equivalent, ideally in computer science or a closely related field.
- Strong affinity with Computer Science and interest in field developments.
- Experience in acquisitions, editorial work, or related roles within academic publishing.
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills.
- Strong commercial acumen and ability to make data-driven decisions.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally to conferences and author meetings.

- Master’s degree in a field.
- Previous acquisitions editor experience, particularly in academic or technical publishing.

About the Role

This role is responsible for managing and growing a high-quality book portfolio in the fields of Software Engineering, Information Systems, Databases, and Information Retrieval.
The successful candidate will lead the acquisition of new titles, maintain strong author relationships, manage proposal evaluation and contract negotiation, and ensure timely manuscript delivery. This position plays a central role within our editorial programme and requires close collaboration with colleagues across Production, Marketing, and other departments.
The role offers an excellent opportunity to engage deeply with the academic Computer Science community, develop strategic publishing programmes, and represent Springer Nature at key international conferences.
Role Responsibilities:
Editorial Acquisition & Portfolio Management
- Manage a book portfolio of 30-40 titles per year.
- Pursue active acquisitions through email outreach, calls, meetings, and conference participation.
- Review book proposals and work with authors to shape strong project submissions.
- Prepare, negotiate, and execute publishing contracts; explain contract terms and workflows to authors.
- Ensure timely delivery of manuscripts and support authors throughout the publishing process.
- Maintain and grow a network of advisors, reviewers, and contributors.
Author & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary contact for authors in the assigned subject area.
- Maintain regular communication with authors to ensure smooth progress of their projects.
- Collaborate closely with editorial colleagues across other offices to coordinate programme strategy.
- Represent Springer Nature at relevant conferences and events as required.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Production, Marketing, and Promotion teams on individual projects and programme strategy.
- Provide input on marketing initiatives and ensure strong positioning of titles.
- Coordinate with internal teams to resolve questions related to workflow, timelines, and portfolio development.
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
Essential
- BA or equivalent, ideally in computer science or a closely related field such as mathematics, physics, or engineering
- Strong affinity with Computer Science and an interest in staying up to date with field developments.
- Experience in acquisitions, editorial work, or related roles within academic publishing is an advantage.
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills.
- Strong commercial acumen and ability to make data-driven decisions.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally to conferences and author meetings.
