Job Description

Apple's AIML Residency is a year-long program for experts to apply their domain expertise to innovate machine learning and AI products. Residents will attend ML/AI courses, learn from mentors, collaborate, gain hands-on experience on high-impact projects, and publish research. As part of the Siri Agent Modeling team, residents will conduct high-quality research on post-training multi-modal large language models using SFT and RL techniques to enable rich agentic experiences on Apple devices, including reinforcement learning for tool-use, enhancing planning & reasoning in LLMs, and building multimodal LLMs for computer use. Residents can also build product prototypes.
Good To Have:
  • Academic, research, or industry experience in Computer vision, Large Language Models / Generative AI, Machine Learning & ML Research, Natural Language Processing/Speech/Conversational AI, Robotics, Reinforcement Learning, or Multimodal Large Language Models
  • Submission of a cover letter explaining research interests, application to the specific Residency position, and reasons for joining the AIML residency program
Must Have:
  • Proficiency in a programming language such as Python, Objective-C, C++, Swift, and/or R
  • Experience completing a moderate-sized software project
  • Graduate degree in a STEM field or equivalent industry experience in software engineering
  • Availability to work full-time (40 hours/week) July 13, 2026 - July 9, 2027
  • Graduation from a degree program before July 13, 2026 (if currently enrolled)

The AIML Residency is a year-long program inviting experts in various fields to apply their own domain expertise to innovate and build revolutionary machine learning and AI-based products and experiences. As AI-based solutions spread across fields, the need for domain experts to understand machine learning and apply their expertise in ML settings grows. Residents will have the opportunity to attend ML and AI courses, learn from a mentor closely involved in their program, collaborate with fellow residents, gain hands-on experience working on high-impact projects, publish in premier academic conferences, and partner with teams across hardware, software, and services. As part of Siri Agent Modeling team, Residents will be doing high-quality research on post-training multi-modal large language models using SFT and RL techniques (eg. using GRPO, etc.) to enable rich agentic experiences on devices. A few sample work streams include - reinforcement learning for general tool-use, building/enhancing planning & reasoning capabilities in LLMs, building/enhancing multimodal large language models for computer use. Residents will also have the flexibility to build product prototypes using the models we develop.

  • Proficiency in a programming language such as Python, Objective-C, C++, Swift, and/or R. Candidates should have experience completing a moderate-sized software project

  • Graduate degree in a STEM field or equivalent industry experience in software engineering
  • The AIML residency is a one-year program starting in July 2026. Residents must be available to work full-time (40 hours/week) July 13, 2026 - July 9, 2027. Additionally, applicants who are currently enrolled in a degree program must graduate before this program commences on July 13, 2026
  • Ideal candidates will also have academic, research, or industry experience in one of the following: Computer vision, Large Language Models / Generative AI, Machine Learning & ML Research, Natural Language Processing/Speech/Conversational AI, Robotics, Reinforcement Learning, or Multimodal Large Language Models. Thesis, capstone project, internship, co-op, and/or proven experience in these fields qualifies

Base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $147,400 and $220,900, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Employees also have the opportunity to become a shareholder through participation in the company’s discretionary employee stock programs. Employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
