Onward Search is seeking a Benefits & Payroll Manager for a professional services organization that values innovation and inclusion. This full-time, fully remote role involves overseeing end-to-end payroll and benefits management across multiple countries, primarily the United States and Canada. The manager will ensure payroll compliance, manage tax regulations, and administer benefits to support a streamlined and effective employee experience, joining the Human Resources team as a subject matter expert.
Must have:
  • Manage end-to-end payroll cycles in the US and Canada, ensuring compliance with tax and labor regulations.
  • Oversee US and Canadian benefits programs (medical, dental, vision, life, 401(k), RRSPs, wellness), including renewals and open enrollment.
  • Partner with finance, HR, and external vendors to support payroll reconciliations, audits, and global payroll via EORs.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory filings (W-2s, T4s, 1095-Cs, ACA) and maintain current knowledge of employment laws.
  • Develop and improve SOPs, workflows, and system automation for payroll and benefits processes.
  • Provide reporting, data analysis, and recommendations to enhance employee experience and operational efficiency.
  • 7+ years of payroll and benefits experience, with 4+ years focused on US and Canadian compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of US and Canadian labor laws, tax regulations, and benefits practices.
  • Experience managing global payroll/benefits and partnering with EOR vendors.
  • Proficiency with payroll systems and HRIS platforms (Dayforce strongly preferred).
  • High attention to detail, data integrity, confidentiality, and advanced Excel/reporting skills.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.

While the company is headquartered in Richmond, this role is based remotely and supports operations primarily in the United States and Canada.

You’ll join the Human Resources team to oversee the end-to-end management of payroll and benefits across multiple countries. As the subject matter expert, you’ll ensure payroll compliance, manage tax regulations, and oversee benefits administration to support a streamlined and effective employee experience.

Benefits & Payroll Manager Responsibilities:
