Job Description

The Consumer Scientist is a key member of the Consumer Science & Product Experience group, ensuring consumer-centricity of innovations. They ensure that these innovations provide a consumer preferred user experience, via consumer modelling, better holistic and sensory design, a coherent and compelling product story. The role involves the entire innovation lifecycle, from ideation to product launch, as well as product optimization post launch. Responsibilities include identifying innovation opportunities from qualitative and quantitative consumer research, defining Ideal Product Models, getting consumer feedback on prototyping, validating claims, utilizing research methodologies, partnering with Sensory Scientists, generating best practices, and training colleagues. The role involves direct contact with R&D, CBIA and marketing teams.

Hybrid role 2 days a week min- Weybridge, Surrey.

The Consumer Scientist is a key member of the Consumer Science & Product Experience group, and exists to:

  • Ensure consumer-centricity of specific innovations within a category and/or a region pipeline.

  • Ensure that these innovations provide a consumer preferred user experience, via consumer modelling, better holistic and sensory design, a coherent and compelling product story, and resulting in leadership shares and sales.

  • The role touches the entire innovation lifecycle, from ideation to product launch, as well as product optimization post launch.

The ideal candidate must have a unique skill set with some scientific background, a good understanding of the entire innovation process, some expertise in Consumer Science/Research, some interest or level of commercial awareness via experience with working with commercial and marketing organizations, a high level of creativity, problem solving and entrepreneurship.

Key responsibilities:

  • Identify innovation opportunities from qualitative and quantitative consumer research

  • Help to define Ideal Product Models for initiatives via qualitative research and quantitative consumer modelling

  • Iteratively gets consumer feedback on prototyping via qualitative and quantitative research

  • Validates lead product options before they undergo ‘formulation lock’.

  • Validates non-clinical claims with consumers via quantitative research

  • Validate with consumers the product optimization programs post launch, for in-market products.

  • Utilize and suggest fit-for-purpose research methodologies, including agile / fast-turnaround approaches.

  • Partner with Sensory Scientists to conduct relevant consumer / sensory panel research and leverages the power of combining sensory and consumer research.

  • Generates best practices, develops capabilities, and shares them with colleagues in the Consumer Science & Product Experience group.

  • Champion consumer closeness within the R&D group and train/coaches R&D colleagues outside the Consumer Science & Product Experience group.

  • Ensure that interactions with consumers are compliant with the Human Subject Testing Policy, and that all quality and regulatory requirements are met.

  • The role involves direct contact with R&D, CBIA and marketing teams

Educational background:

Minimum level of education: BS degree

Area of Specialisation: Sciences: Chemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Physics, Mathematics, Sensory, Food, Biochemistry or Biological science

  • Role leverages some experience in the industry or research  agencies

  • Ability to drive scientific excellence, understand key technologies and communicate effectively within R&D

  • Needs to be able to independently conduct Consumer Science research programs  (with support and guidance from the Consumer Science team)

  • Need to collaborate with R&D, Marketing and CBIA colleagues

Minimum Level of relevant Job-Related Experience required: >2 years, preferably in FMCG or Healthcare or research agencies

  • Some experience in Consumer Science/Products Research (qualitative & quantitative research, consumer modelling, upstream/front end consumer need definition, downstream/product

  • validation and claims substantiation)

  • Excellent analytical skills, including strategic thinking

  • Collaborative, strong team player

  • Problem solving in a matrixed environment
