Job Summary

Photon Tadpole Studios is seeking a Game Designer to join a small, experienced team. The role involves conceptualizing game rules, settings, characters, and worlds, writing and maintaining design documents, researching audiences, and iterating on features. The designer will also develop levels, mechanics, and UI/UX, work with game development software like Unity, and implement complex systems such as virtual economy balancing. Candidates should have 0-2 years of experience and a passion for game analysis.

Must Have

  • Conceptualize game rules, settings, characters, and worlds.
  • Write and maintain game design documents.
  • Research game audiences and genres.
  • Collect feedback and iterate on design features.
  • Develop levels, mechanics, rules, and features for games.
  • Work directly on game development software (e.g., Unity).
  • Create and maintain game navigation flow, UI, and UX.
  • Understand and implement complex systems like virtual economy balancing.
  • 0-2 years of experience in game development.
  • Ability to take criticism and adapt.
  • Experience working on at least one published game.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Keen observational skills in game design.
  • Ability to analyze existing games.

Good to Have

  • Experience working with Unity.
  • Experience with other game engines such as Unreal, Cocos.
  • Animation fundamentals and experience with any animation systems.
  • Some understanding of programming fundamentals.
  • Understanding of the mobile games industry, particularly free-to-play games.
  • Some understanding of different art types and color theory.
  • Basic understanding of general design thinking.

Job Description

As a Game Designer, you will be expected to:

  • Conceptualize the rules, settings, characters and worlds of the games needed to be designed
  • Write and thoroughly maintain the game design docs for internal and external use
  • Research the audiences and genres of the games required to be developed
  • Collect feedback and iterate on features and ideas in the current design
  • Conceptualize cohesive game systems which work harmoniously with each other in the overall design
  • Develop levels, mechanics, rules and features for games as required
  • Engage the team to contribute to game design discussions
  • Work directly on game development software (such as Unity) to develop and polish games
  • Create and maintain the navigation flow, UI and UX of the game
  • Discuss and critique design from peers
  • Understand and implement complex systems such as virtual economy balancing
  • Google and integrate existing solutions instead of re-inventing the wheel

You should at least have:

  • 0 to 2 years of experience working in the game dev industry
  • Ability to take criticism and feedback and react/adapt to it
  • Worked on at least 1 published games
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Keen observational skills and ability to recognize common design systems in multiple types of games
  • Ability to analyze existing games and articulate and what makes them good/bad

An ideal candidate should also have:

  • Experience working with Unity
  • Any experience working with other game engines such as Unreal, Cocos etc
  • Animation fundamentals and experience with any animation systems
  • Some understanding of programming fundamentals and how games are put together
  • Understanding of the mobile games industry, particularly free-2-play games
