You will guide workflows integrating 2D and 3D elements, ensuring visual consistency, and championing quality across episodic, feature, and premium content. This role requires hands-on expertise, strategic planning, and team leadership. You will collaborate with department heads, pipeline, and production teams to evolve tools and techniques, maintain studio-wide best practices, and support a scalable compositing pipeline built for creative excellence and technical efficiency.
Must have:
  • Define and improve compositing workflows and best practices
  • Set the visual tone for compositing across all productions
  • Oversee technical implementation of compositing processes
  • Partner with the Pipeline and Software teams
  • Mentor compositing supervisors and artists
Good to have:
  • Experience working in animation-first environments
  • Familiarity with Maya, Unreal Engine, Katana, Gaffer, Solaris, Houdini, or other CG tools
  • Understanding of render layer management and compositing templates
  • Ability to contribute to cross-departmental process development
  • Experience developing or influencing pipeline tooling

Overview

 

WildBrain Studios is looking for a Head of Compositing to join our team! 
 

As Head of Compositing, you will oversee the creative direction, technical development, and operational performance of the department. You’ll guide workflows that integrate 2D and 3D elements, ensure visual consistency, and champion quality across episodic, feature, and premium content. This role requires a mix of hands-on expertise, strategic planning, and team leadership. You will collaborate with department heads, pipeline, and production teams to evolve tools and techniques, maintain studio-wide best practices, and support a scalable compositing pipeline built for creative excellence and technical efficiency. 
 

Reporting to the Head of Technology, the Head of Compositing is ultimately responsible for driving the direction of our Compositing department. 

Responsibilities & Qualifications

 

What You'll Do:

  • Define and continuously improve compositing workflows, tools, and best practices 
  • Set the visual tone for compositing across all productions and ensure alignment with the studio’s artistic vision 
  • Oversee the technical implementation of compositing processes, including rendering integration and data management 
  • Partner with the Pipeline and Software teams to develop tools that support the needs of the department 
  • Contribute to project bidding and planning by defining scope, costs, and departmental capabilities  
  • Mentor compositing supervisors, leads and artists; foster a collaborative and high-performing team culture 
  • Collaborate with Lighting and other CG departments to ensure seamless integration of assets and final image quality 
  • Communicate and mentor the Lighting teams to build a high functioning, growth minded team dynamic 
  • Collaborate with fellow Heads of Departments to ensure our teams continue to work together towards the same goals and timelines   
  • Manage the recruitment, development, succession planning and casting of the Compositing department working primarily through your direct reports the studios Compositing Supervisors 
  • Provide regular feedback and recommendations to senior management on departmental performance and studio-wide improvements 
  • Creates and maintains documentation, guidelines, and training materials for compositing techniques and best practices 

What You'll Bring:

  • 7+ years of compositing experience in animation or VFX, with 2 years in a  leadership or supervisory role
  • Strong technical background with deep proficiency in Nuke; familiarity with After Effects or other relevant tools is a plus 
  • Experience working in studios with multiple concurrent projects 
  • Strong technical understanding of CG pipelines and the ability to develop efficient workflows and identify additional tools required
  • Current knowledge of tools and emerging technologies 
  • Experience with 2D and 3D animation workflows. Familiar with various animation software and pipelines
  • Proven leadership and management experience in leading a team of compositors 
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities to identify and resolve technical and creative issues
  • Strong technical understanding of CG pipelines and the ability to develop efficient   workflows and identify additional tools required 
  • A keen eye for detail and commitment to ensuring the highest visual quality, maintaining consistency and seamless integration across all shots 

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working in animation-first environments; hybrid or VFX backgrounds are also welcome
  • Familiarity with Maya, Unreal Engine, Katana, Gaffer, Solaris, Houdini, or other CG tools 
  • Understanding of render layer management and compositing templates 
  • Ability to contribute to cross-departmental process development 
  • Experience developing or influencing pipeline tooling

Pay Range: $3175 - $3550 per week.

Candidates are paid within the range posted, but their exact pay will vary based on the level, responsibilities and expectations of the role. We also take into consideration the experience and skills that individual brings, with consideration of our internal equity
