Job Summary

This role is for a Junior Surfacing Artist at a dynamic animation studio, working on exciting projects like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Netflix's Ghostbusters. The artist will establish the look and surface qualities for animated characters, props, and environments using textures and shaders. They will collaborate with CG and BG teams to ensure visual style and workflow, delivering high-quality assets and meeting production deadlines.

Must Have

  • Working within a brief and using 2D design reference to paint CG textures faithful to the production style
  • Implementation of shaders across assigned CG assets
  • Submit CG assets for review, rendering in a way that best indicates their use within the Series
  • Create UV maps as required, adhering to pipeline requirements and suitable for asset resolution and complexity
  • Collaborate with the CG modelling team with Leads guidance on UV mapping feedback
  • Collaborate with the CG and BG teams with Leads guidance on creative and technical issues to ensure high-standard asset delivery
  • Work in partnership with lighters and compositors to meet schedules and deadlines
  • Ability to work in close partnership with the CG and Design teams
  • Ability to work within a team environment and follow guidance from creative and technical supervisors
  • Ability to maintain consistent productivity in a fast-paced work environment while producing high quality work
  • Ability to work independently as well as under direct supervision
  • Excellent communication and time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritise

Job Description

A dynamic and innovative animation studio dedicated to pushing the boundaries of character animation and storytelling. We are working on exciting projects such as Avatar: The Last Airbender feature film, Netflix's Ghostbusters animated series and Stranger Things animated series, as well as our production Tales From Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan.

The Surfacing Artist establishes the look and surface qualities for animated characters, props and environments. Through the use of textures and shaders; the Surfacing Artist will guide the production process to achieve the desired visual style. The Surfacing Artist collaborates with or aids the rest of the CG team to ensure the proper workflow and specifications are being developed to achieve the desired look on all textures.

All duties and responsibilities as reasonably required by the Production Company of a Surfacing artist, including:

  • Working within a brief and using 2D design reference to paint CG textures that are faithful to the style of the production;
  • Implementation of shaders across assigned CG assets;
  • Submit CG assets for review, rendering in a way that best indicates their use within the Series;
  • Create some UV maps as required, that adhere to pipeline requirements and are suitable for the resolution and complexity of the assets;
  • Collaborate with the CG modelling team with the Leads guidance in giving feedback of UV mapping that is suitable for the resolution and complexity of the assets;
  • Collaborate with the CG and BG teams with the Leads guidance on relevant creative and technical issues, to ensure assets are delivered to the very highest standard and correctly for the subsequent departments;
  • Work in partnership with lighters and compositors to ensure schedules and deadlines are met as established by the Producer and Directors.

About you:

  • Knowledge of Maya and Photoshop and proficiency in painting software like Substance Painter or Mari;
  • Ability to work in close partnership with the CG and Design teams;
  • Ability to work within a team environment and follow guidance from creative and technical supervisors;
  • Ability to maintain a consistent level of productivity in a fast-paced work environment while producing high quality work;
  • Ability to work independently as well as under direct supervision;
  • Excellent communication and time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritise as required.
  • Performs other tasks and responsibilities related to the creation of computer-generated animation and as otherwise reasonably required by the production company.
