Job Summary
Join Grab's engineering team to lead the technical direction and guide engineers in building reliable and scalable systems for Grab's payments ecosystem. This role involves taking ownership of key problem areas, influencing architecture across services, and collaborating with engineering, product, and design teams. You will focus on improving availability, scalability, latency, and overall performance of backend services, primarily using Go.
Must Have
- Set technical direction for backend services
- Lead the design of high-impact systems that improve availability, scalability, latency, and overall performance
- Write high-quality Go code
- Guide others toward strong engineering practices through consistent design and code reviews
- Drive architectural improvements across Payments
- Work closely with infrastructure teams to evolve service foundations, improve observability, and ensure smooth rollout of new capabilities
- Mentor engineers, help them grow in technical depth, and create a healthy, collaborative engineering environment
- Collaborate with product and design teams to shape features, validate assumptions, and build reliable user-facing experiences
- 10 years of experience in a relevant field, with payments domain experience
- Ability to build robust backend systems, including DBMS, caches, NoSQL, and app servers
- Proficiency in Java or Golang
- Strong knowledge of computer science fundamentals like data structures, algorithms, and operating systems
- Experience with distributed systems
- Experience in building consumer-facing products
- Knowledge of developing OLTP systems and performance
- Experience deploying code in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud environments

We're looking for a Lead Software Engineer who can drive technical direction, guide engineers, and deliver reliable and scalable systems for Grab's payments ecosystem. You'll take ownership of key problem areas, influence architecture across services, and partner closely with engineering, product, and design teams. You will be reporting to an Engineering Manager.

What You Will Lead and Deliver
- Set technical direction for backend services and lead the design of high-impact systems that improve availability, scalability, latency, and overall performance.
- Write high-quality Go code and guide others toward strong engineering practices through consistent design and code reviews.
- Drive architectural improvements across Payments, partnering with engineers across teams to build systems that scale with growing demand.
- Work closely with infrastructure teams to evolve service foundations, improve observability, and ensure smooth rollout of new capabilities.
- Mentor engineers, help them grow in technical depth, and create a healthy, collaborative engineering environment.
- Collaborate with product and design teams to shape features, validate assumptions, and build reliable user-facing experiences.
Qualifications
- Bring 10 years of experience in a relevant field, with payments domain experience.
- Build robust backend systems, including DBMS, caches, NoSQL, and app servers.
- You will use your proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Java or Golang, while applying strong knowledge of computer science fundamentals like data structures, algorithms, and operating systems.
- You will demonstrate proactivity, creativity, and a keen ability to balance the needs of product, engineering, and business.
- You will use your experience with distributed systems to build scalable and reliable solutions.
- Add value with your experience in building consumer-facing products.
- Contribute your knowledge of developing OLTP systems and performance.
- Experience deploying code in AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud environments
