ILM Sydney is seeking an experienced Lighting Technical Director (TD) for a short-term contract, up to 6 months starting November in Sydney. The TD will work with Visual Effects Supervisors to create the look of computer-generated objects and scenes, responsible for lighting, shading, rendering, and some compositing. This role involves rendering final images, creating light rigs, developing technical solutions, managing upstream elements, and working closely with other departments to finalize shots.
Good To Have:
  • Technical knowledge of path tracing.
  • Scripting experience using Python or OpScript.
Must Have:
  • Render final images for either digitally integrated VFX or full CG shots.
  • Create or implement light rigs, using either on-set reference or concept art.
  • Actively develop technical solutions and techniques that meet the artistic and technical direction.
  • Manage all upstream elements such as animation, simulation, and FX caches.
  • Work closely with Compositors to finalize shots.
  • Independently navigate and utilize previous setups for sequences, developing or matching key shots, and managing multiple assets and lighting setups.
  • Work closely with Look Development Artists to evaluate assets within a shot context.
  • Manage volumetric light setups, including shadowing and cucoloris development.
  • Light and render complex assets, including those using CG hair and scattering skin materials.
  • In-depth knowledge of software used specifically for lighting, with an emphasis on Katana (and preferably Renderman).
  • A minimum of 3-5+ years production experience or feature film experience in lighting work.
  • Proficiency with Nuke.
  • Experience in a Linux environment.

Job Summary:

This role is a short-term project, up to 6 months starting November in Sydney.

ILM Sydney is seeking an experienced and passionate Lighting Technical Director (TD) for a short-term contract, who has a passion for high end VFX and experience; working in a collaborative team atmosphere.

Lighting Technical Directors (TD) work with direction from the Visual Effects Supervisors and Sequence Supervisors to create the look of computer-generated objects and scenes. They are responsible for lighting, shading, rendering, and some compositing. TDs work with all other departments to bring the shot together.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Render final images for either digitally integrated VFX or full CG shots.

To be a successful candidate for this short-term contract, you will have a mix of these skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of software used specifically for lighting, with an emphasis on Katana (and preferably Renderman) .
  • A minimum of 3-5+ years production experience or feature film experience in lighting work.
  • Proficiency with Nuke.
  • Experience in a Linux environment.
  • A Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or computer graphics, or equivalent production experience.

Desirable Skills

  • Technical knowledge of path tracing.
  • Scripting experience using Python or OpScript.
