Job Description

The Manager of the SQL Server Database Team leads database administrators and engineers in designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing Microsoft SQL Server environments. This role ensures the availability, reliability, performance, and security of enterprise data assets across production, development, and disaster recovery. The ideal candidate is a strong technical leader balancing strategic direction with hands-on expertise, fostering collaboration, and driving continuous improvement in database management practices.
Good To Have:
  • Master’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Experience with Azure SQL, Managed Instance, or AWS RDS for SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code (IaC).
  • Experience supporting data warehousing, ETL, or analytics workloads.
  • Strong understanding of governance, data security, and compliance frameworks (SOX, HIPAA, GDPR, etc.).
Must Have:
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of SQL Server DBAs and engineers.
  • Define team goals and establish performance metrics.
  • Oversee database design, performance tuning, and capacity planning.
  • Ensure high availability using Always On Availability Groups, clustering, replication.
  • Manage database patching, upgrades, and migrations.
  • Enforce database security, encryption, and compliance.
  • Establish best practices for database deployment, monitoring, and automation.
  • Collaborate with development teams for optimal database design.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Implement proactive monitoring and alerting for database stability.
  • Partner with application, infrastructure, and data architecture teams.
  • Drive modernization efforts including cloud migration and containerization.
  • Manage vendor relationships and participate in budget planning.
  • Possess 7+ years experience as a SQL Server Database Administrator or Engineer.
  • Have 3+ years experience in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrate deep technical expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, including performance tuning.
  • Expertise in High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) for SQL Server.
  • Proficiency in SQL Server security, compliance, backup, and recovery strategies.
  • Strong knowledge of T-SQL, PowerShell, and automation frameworks.
  • Experience with database monitoring and management tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leadership & Team Management
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of SQL Server DBAs and database engineers.
  • Define team goals, establish performance metrics, and ensure alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Database Administration & Operations
  • Oversee database design, performance tuning, capacity planning, and backup/recovery strategies.
  • Ensure high availability through technologies such as Always On Availability Groups, clustering, replication, and log shipping.
  • Manage database patching, upgrades, and migrations across environments.
  • Enforce database security policies, encryption, and compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Process & Governance
  • Establish and maintain best practices for database deployment, monitoring, and automation.
  • Collaborate with development teams to ensure database design supports application performance and scalability.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Implement proactive monitoring and alerting solutions to ensure database stability and minimize downtime.
  • Strategic Planning & Collaboration
  • Partner with application, infrastructure, and data architecture teams to plan and execute data-related initiatives.
  • Drive modernization efforts such as cloud migration, containerization, and infrastructure automation.
  • Manage vendor relationships and participate in capacity and budget planning for database infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 7+ years of experience as a SQL Server Database Administrator or Engineer.
  • 3+ years of experience in a leadership, supervisory, or team lead role.
  • Deep technical expertise in Microsoft SQL Server including:
  • Performance tuning and query optimization
  • High availability and disaster recovery (HA/DR)
  • Security and compliance management
  • Backup and recovery strategies
  • Strong knowledge of T-SQL, PowerShell, and automation frameworks.
  • Experience with monitoring and management tools (e.g., SolarWinds, or native tools).
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Experience with Azure SQL, Managed Instance, or AWS RDS for SQL Server.
  • Familiarity with DevOps pipelines, CI/CD, and infrastructure as code (IaC).
