Job Summary
The Nexstar DC Bureau is searching for a Producer to cover Washington, DC for Nexstar’s local newsrooms across the country. This role involves developing, producing, writing, editing, and uploading news content for all Nexstar platforms, focusing on politics and government stories. The Producer will work closely with reporters and photographers to create clear, compelling content, ensuring local impact for viewers. Daily presence in the Washington, DC newsroom, one block from the U.S. Capitol, is required.
Must Have
- Maintain daily event schedule, route multiple live feeds, and ingest recordings.
- Monitor and cut news events and interviews for distribution to Nexstar stations.
- Establish familiarity with lawmakers of interest to Nexstar stations utilizing a regional beat system.
- Develop long-form content for streaming programs with a focus on podcast-style conversations.
- Field produce special coverage including remote live shots and high-profile interviews.
- Learn coverage rules and regulations for the U.S. Capitol, White House, and other federal buildings.
- Arrange interviews with people who can provide information about stories.
- Review and evaluate notes about events to isolate pertinent facts and details.
- Research and analyze background information related to news stories.
- Gather information about events through research, interviews, monitoring video feeds and/or attendance at functions.
- Pitch stories to news managers and reporters which are relevant to local communities.
- Write copy paying close attention to factual accuracy, grammar, readability, and style.
- Revise work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements.
- Ensure that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
- Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism or a related field or equivalent experience.
- 2 to 5 years of experience covering politics and government events.
- Fluency in English.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience in news producing.
- Proficiency with non-linear editing, computers, smart phones, TVU, and other digital news gathering equipment.
- Ability to meet deadlines, prioritize assignments, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
- Flexibility to work any shift.

The Nexstar DC Bureau is searching for a Producer to cover Washington, DC for Nexstar’s local newsrooms across the country. The Nexstar DC Bureau provides local coverage to 116 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, and Tampa. The Bureau works closely with Nexstar’s 24-hour network, NewsNation, and the Capitol news website TheHill.com.
We are looking for a journalist who loves covering politics and government stories. The job requires attention to detail and clear and conversational writing for reporting on how events in Washington impact local viewers. Our bureau team is responsible for enterprising stories of local significance to our markets.
The Producer position is a unique opportunity to live in Washington, DC, and have a desk one block from the U.S. Capitol. This is an “in the office” job that requires daily presence in the Newsroom.
Position Summary:
The Producer works with the Executive Producer, reporters, producers, and photographers to develop, produce, write, edit, and upload news content for all Nexstar platforms in a manner that is clear, compelling, and meaningful.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

- Establishes familiarity with lawmakers of interest to Nexstar stations utilizing a regional beat system.
- Develops long-form content for streaming programs with a focus on podcast-style conversations.
- Field produces special coverage including remote live shots and high-profile interviews.
- Learns coverage rules and regulations for the U.S. Capitol, White House, and other federal buildings.
- Arranges interviews with people who can provide information about stories.
- Reviews and evaluates notes about events to isolate pertinent facts and details. Determines a story's emphasis, length, format, and organizes material accordingly.
- Researches and analyzes background information related to news stories to provide complete and accurate information.
- Gathers information about events through research, interviews, monitoring video feeds and/or attendance at political, news, sports, artistic, social or other functions.
- Pitches stories to news managers and reporters which are relevant to local communities.
- Receives assignments and evaluates leads and tips to develop story ideas.
- Discusses issues with news managers to establish priorities or positions.
- Checks reference materials such as books, news files or public records to obtain relevant facts.
- Writes copy paying close attention to factual accuracy, grammar, readability, and style.
- Revises work to meet editorial approval or to fit time requirements.
- Ensures that all content meets company standards for journalistic integrity and production quality.
- Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Broadcast Journalism or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and work-related experience.
- 2 to 5 years of experience covering politics and government events.
- Experience in Washington, DC or covering a state capitol is a plus.
- Fluency in English.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Experience in news producing.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The Producer must be able to sit, conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the reporting of co-workers, work near others, work outdoors occasionally in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. In addition, the Producer must be able to lift, set up and operate equipment weighing up to 25 pounds, and be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools, or controls. Repetitive movements are required. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
Salary Range: $75,000-$80,000
