Job Summary

This Optical Design Engineer will be responsible for the design and development of new optical systems and products for high-volume, low-cost manufacturing. The role involves leading product development teams, designing optics and imaging systems to customer requirements, and acting as the primary technical contact. The engineer will create custom optical designs, manage products from inception to manufacture, and perform complex engineering tasks including prototyping and testing.

Must Have

  • Hands-on experience with state-of-the-art manufacturing systems.
  • Experience with Zemax or CodeV.
  • Working knowledge of Labview, Matlab, or CAD tools.
  • Strong analytical and practical knowledge of geometrical and physical optics.
  • Knowledge and experience with imaging optics and optical systems design.
  • Experience with optical test methods and equipment.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor reticle layout tools and workflows.
  • Solid understanding of statistical methods and design of experiments.
  • Solid understanding of design for manufacture and NPI processes.
  • Good leadership, excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Good to Have

  • Experience in design of diffractive optical elements (DOEs).

Optical Design Engineer

This individual will be responsible for the design and development of new optical systems/products destined for high-volume and low-cost manufacturing. You will also lead product development teams with specific responsibilities for designing optics, imaging systems, and products to customer-provided requirements. In this role, you will act as the primary technical contact between the customer and the New Product Introduction (NPI) team.

Broadcom's Micro Optics team, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, develops and manufactures wafer-based micro-optics and micro-optical systems. The group's leading-edge product offerings include a wide range of lenses that are used in a variety of highly-specialized consumer and industrial applications including mobile phones, photonics, photolithography, telecommunications, vision, and medical.

Responsibilities

  • Create custom optical designs for widely varying Micro-Optics applications, including refractive, diffractive, and hybrid.
  • Efficiently manage new products from design inception to manufacture.
  • Proactively identify technical solutions and risks for program deliverables.
  • Perform engineering tasks of high complexity spanning optical design, prototyping, and testing while meeting schedule milestones and quality goals.
  • Learn and follow the defined design/development (NPI) processes.
  • Work proactively with engineering staff on process improvements tasks.
  • Train and support other technical staff members while performing their job functions with minimal supervision and direction.
  • Represent Broadcom Micro Optics at technical conferences, supporting the Sales/Marketing teams to develop new customers. Some travel is required.
  • Some duties may require work in a cleanroom environment (70° F) with special gowning requirements. You may also be expected to work with high power lasers in laser-controlled areas.

Minimum Requirements

  • BS degree in relevant field and 8+ years of related experience.
  • Hands-on experience with state-of–the-art manufacturing systems used in high-volume production.
  • Experience with Zemax or CodeV; working knowledge of Labview, Matlab, or CAD tools (ie Solidworks). Experience in design of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) is preferred, but not required. Successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to apply new learning quickly to create practical solutions to challenging optical requirements.
  • Strong analytical and practical knowledge of geometrical and physical optics.
  • Knowledge and experience with imaging optics and optical systems design and subsequent measured optical performance of manufactured lenses.
  • Experience with optical test methods and equipment, including automation via LabView.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor reticle layout tools and workflows.
  • Solid understanding of statistical methods and design of experiments.
  • Solid understanding of design for manufacture and consistent discipline to follow established NPI processes, including completion of all documentation required for the product release to manufacture.
  • Good leadership skills; excellent verbal and written skills required.

Additional Job Description:

Compensation and Benefits

The annual base salary range for this position is $88,300 - $141,300.

This position is also eligible for a discretionary annual bonus in accordance with relevant plan documents, and equity in accordance with equity plan documents and equity award agreements.
