Job Summary
The International Desk at The New York Times is seeking an experienced Reporter-Researcher for its Jerusalem bureau. This role involves supporting the bureau chief and correspondents by organizing interviews, researching themes, data, and sources, and tracking news across the region. The successful candidate will contribute to coverage on politics, conflict, security, international relations, culture, religion, business, and climate change, assisting with breaking news, enterprise stories, investigations, and innovative story forms. The position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to thrive under pressure in a challenging environment.
Must Have
- Monitor current events across local media, including traditional news outlets and social media
- Provide fast, accurate, verified and concise updates and briefings for correspondents and editors
- Work closely with correspondents and editors to identify, research and contribute to news and enterprise stories
- Suggest story ideas and themes
- Find, contact and arrange or conduct interviews with sources and compile research memos
- Assist reporters in the field, including with translation
- Cover news accurately and efficiently for all Times platforms
- Contribute to Live coverage when needed
- Maintain and cultivate news sources and contacts
- Present facts and analysis in clear written or other form in conformity with style, length and other requirements
- Develop high-impact stories from broader themes that underpin incremental news developments
- Obtain, read and analyze government, legal and corporate filings and reports
- Work with the Audience team to gather insights on local readers and how to better engage with them
- Request and obtain access in difficult-to-reach locations or people
- Provide translation to correspondents and editors as needed
- Perform other journalistic duties as determined by supervisors
- Demonstrate support and understanding of journalistic independence and commitment to the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

The International Desk is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile reporter-researcher to join our Jerusalem bureau and support the work we produce in the region. You will help with fixing and organizing interviews, researching themes, data and other information, and sourcing. You will play a critical role in supporting the bureau chief and correspondents, tracking and covering news and enterprise stories across the region, helping to grow the audience and pursuing investigations.
In the job, you will contribute to coverage of politics, conflict and security, international relations, culture, religion, business and climate change, among other topics, and you may be asked to help with breaking news, enterprise, investigations and innovative story forms. Main responsibilities:
- Monitoring current events across local media, including traditional news outlets and social media, and providing fast, accurate, verified and concise updates and briefings for our correspondents and editors.
- Working closely with correspondents and editors to identify, research and contribute to news and enterprise stories, as well as suggesting story ideas and themes.
- Finding, contacting and arranging or conducting interviews with sources and compiling research memos.
- Assisting reporters in the field, including with translation.
- Covering news accurately and efficiently, for any and all Times platforms.
- Contributing to Live coverage when needed.
- Maintaining and cultivating news sources and contacts.
- Presenting facts and analysis in clear written or other form and in conformity with style, length and other requirements, and developing high-impact stories from the broader themes that underpin incremental news developments.

Our ideal candidate:
- Fluent English, Arabic and Hebrew, written and spoken.
- An appreciation of New York Times culture, writing style and commitment to journalistic independence, standards and ethics.
- Meticulous organizational skills; ability to prioritize with strong attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
- A strong, demonstrable passion for journalism.
- Demonstrable initiative and self-starting; ability to identify and tackle tasks that need completion without being asked.
- A good collaborator and receptive to feedback.
- Ability to deal with all levels of management, staff and sources in a highly professional manner.
- Professional judgment with respect to confidentiality is a must.
- Deep knowledge and ability to expand learning of the politics and culture of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank.
- Ability to build a wide source network in Israel, Gaza and the West Bank.
- Good general computer and tech skills are a must, including experience with Google Docs, Excel, WhatsApp, email and video chat programs.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills.
