Job Description

As a Senior Environment Artist specializing in roads at Lighthouse Games, you'll be integral to shaping the game's environment. Your focus will be on designing and implementing realistic and detailed road systems that enhance gameplay and player immersion. Responsibilities include developing various road types (highways, country roads, urban streets), collaborating with level designers and the art director, ensuring seamless environmental integration, optimizing assets for performance, and mentoring junior artists. Your work will directly affect the player's experience while navigating the game world. Experience shipping at least one major title is essential.
Must have:
  • Shipped at least one major title
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling software (Maya, 3DSMax, Blender)
  • Extensive Unreal Engine or Unity experience
  • Strong understanding of road design principles
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills

  • Experience with open-world games

Description

As a Senior Environment Artist focusing on Roads, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our game’s environment, particularly in crafting detailed and realistic road systems that enhance gameplay and player immersion. Working alongside the Art Director and other key stakeholders, your expertise in road design will ensure that our game's landscapes feel authentic and are crafted with precision and attention to detail.

You'll be responsible for developing various road types, from highways and country roads to urban streets, while considering their interaction with the environment and player navigation. Your work will directly impact the player's experience as they traverse the game's world.

Key Duties Include

  • Road Design and Creation: Develop and implement diverse road systems, ensuring each type not only meets aesthetic requirements but also enhances functionality and gameplay.
  • Collaboration with Teams: Collaborate closely with Level Designers and the Art Director to create road designs that are visually cohesive with the game’s world and contribute to seamless gameplay flow.
  • Environment Integration: Ensure that road systems are intricately integrated into the surrounding environment, taking into account natural topology and existing structures to create believable transitions.
  • Optimize Assets: Focus on optimizing road assets for performance while maintaining high visual fidelity, ensuring they meet the game’s technical requirements.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and mentorship to junior artists working on road assets and environmental design, fostering a collaborative and innovative atmosphere.

Requirements

  • Shipped Games: Proven experience in shipping at least one major title.
  • Technical Expertise: Strong proficiency with 3D modeling software (Maya, 3DSMax, Blender) and terrain tools, with a focus on road design and environmental modeling.
  • Game Engine Proficiency: Extensive experience with Unreal Engine or Unity, specifically in creating and integrating road systems, ensuring optimization for performance.
  • Design Fundamentals: Strong understanding of road design principles, including composition, materials, and environmental integration to enhance gameplay and navigation.
  • Team Collaboration: Excellent communication skills with a passion for collaborative work and mentoring, helping drive the vision of the art team forward.

Desirable

  • Experience with Open World Games: Background in creating expansive road networks in large-scale, open-world environments.
  • Aesthetic Awareness: Deep understanding of how roads interact with their environments, including urban design and natural landscapes.
  • Strong Portfolio: A portfolio showcasing a variety of road designs and environmental elements, highlighting your attention to detail and technical prowess.
