Demonware seeks a Senior Software Engineer to manage infrastructure supporting backend game servers for large-scale multiplayer games. Responsibilities include maintaining the global server fleet, collaborating with game studio engineers on online features and server performance, resolving large-scale issues, providing technical mentorship, and proactively developing backend systems. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of experience in service scalability and reliability, expertise in Python, deployment tools (Ansible/Puppet/Chef/Kubernetes), and relational/non-relational databases. Understanding of networking fundamentals, distributed systems, and web technologies is crucial. The role involves root cause analysis, implementing fixes, writing documentation, and performing routine maintenance.

Your Mission

We are looking for a Sr. Engineer to join us in managing the infrastructure that supports backend game servers for some of the largest multiplayer games in the world. This is a team with a very large responsibility! 

Key Responsibilities

Priorities can often change in a fast-paced environment like ours, so this role includes, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities: 

  • Maintaining our server fleet across the world, responsible for hosting the server applications that power the backend of our games.
  • Work with game studio engineers to solve problems with online and multiplayer features, as well as dedicated server performance and costing.
  • Investigate and resolve problems at scale for our critically important services. Contribute to root cause analysis efforts. Help the team implement fixes and apply what we’ve learned to prevent recurring issues.
  • Provide technical mentorship to other team members through software engineering standard methodologies.
  • Proactively maintain and develop backend systems infrastructure.
  • Be responsible for routine maintenance procedures and perform detailed testing.
  • Write user documentation related to the services our team owns.

About You

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • Technical expertise in service scalability and reliability
  • Expertise in Python
  • Experience with Deployment tools (Ansible/Puppet/Chef/Kubernetes)
  • Experience with relational and non-relational databases
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals, e.g. TCP/IP, UDP, security and scalability
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Experience with distributed systems and web technologies
  • Take strong ownership of initiatives from inception through deployment and sustainment

Bonus Points 

  • Experience with Django
  • Experience with game development
  • Cloud experience (AWS/GCP/Azure)
  • Experience with MongoDB, Node.js, and React
  • Experience Docker Containerization
  • Expertise in crafting, analyzing, and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems

The standard base pay range for this role is $91,770.00 - $194,120.00 CAD. These values reflect the expected annualized base pay range of new hires in British Columbia, Canada. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location. In addition to a competitive base pay, employees in this role may be eligible for incentive compensation. Incentive compensation is not guaranteed.
