Job Description

CME Group is seeking a Senior SRE to help build, operate, and scale systems in our Markets portfolio, specifically related to CME’s Globex trading platform. This role involves working on systems that deliver low-latency performance and rock-solid reliability for busy trading days. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of SRE principles, enjoy operating Production systems, and be a strong communicator. As a Senior SRE, you will collaborate with SRE leadership and Product leaders to drive improvements in system reliability.
Must have:
  • Collaborate with SRE leadership and product development teams to define SLIs and SLOs.
  • Act as a partner to product teams, delivering observability, monitoring, and alerting improvements.
  • Take accountability for delivery of significant changes, managing risks and dependencies.
  • Drive reliability backlog discussions with stakeholders, identifying risks and influencing prioritization.
  • Design automation for deployment, scaling and recovery.
  • Lead major incident response investigations, ensuring system recovery and post-mortems.
  • Participate in on-call rotation.
  • Run Production review meetings based on data showing performance against SLOs.
  • Contribute to DR and systems resiliency testing and improvements.
  • Mentor and guide junior SREs to improve reliability engineering culture.
  • Mentor and guide product team engineers on SRE practices.
  • Support the migration of markets applications to Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies and industry trends.
Good to have:
  • Previous experience working in a DevOps or SRE role.
  • Previous experience working with metrics & monitoring, OpenTelemetry, Splunk, Prometheus, Grafana, etc
  • Experience and knowledge of working with distributed systems and working with Docker & Kubernetes
  • Good knowledge of networking (HTTP/TCP/UDP/IP)
  • Experience in Financial markets
  • Experience with REST services and message-oriented middleware
  • Experience working in an agile environment

About us:

CME Group is seeking a Senior SRE to help, build, operate and scale systems in our Markets portfolio. Markets SREs work on products and applications related to CME’s Globex trading platform. Our systems deliver an exceptional combination of low-latency performance and rock-solid reliability to seamlessly handle the world’s busiest trading days.

The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of SRE principles and practices, enjoy the cut-and-thrust of operating Production systems, be a strong communicator, and may have previously worked in an SRE role, a software engineering role, a DevOps role or a systems engineering role.

About the role:

As a Senior SRE you'll work closely with Staff SREs and Product leaders to drive improvements in the reliability of our systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with SRE leadership and product development teams to define what “reliable” means for our systems, eliciting and documenting SLIs and SLOs via user-journey distillations
  • Act as a partner to product teams, delivering key observability, monitoring and alerting improvements - continuously improving our SLI & SLOs and observability data enabling faster issue detection and incident resolution
  • Takes accountability for delivery of significant changes - ensuring delivery risks and dependencies are managed with regular proactive communication
  • Drive reliability backlog discussions with key stakeholders - identify reliability risks and influence prioritisation
  • Design automation for deployment, scaling and recovery
  • Lead major incident response investigations - demonstrates urgency, puts customer first, ensures system recovery, and leads post-mortems afterwards
  • Participate in on-call rotation
  • Run Production review meetings based on data showing performance against SLOs, error budgets and incidents
  • Contribute to DR and systems resiliency testing & improvements
  • Mentor and guide junior SREs to improve reliability engineering culture
  • Mentor and guide product team engineers on SRE practices - being an advocate for reliability as a practice, not just a role
  • Support the migration of markets applications to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), ensuring a seamless transition
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies & latest industry trends, and recognise opportunities for CME Group

What We’re Looking for:

  • Experience with Linux-based systems
  • Experience with Cloud-based platform(s) - Google Cloud Platform, GCE, and/or GKE a bonus
  • Understanding of application architectures and messaging protocols
  • Strong coding capabilities (scripting languages Python, Bash, etc.); Java a bonus
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills across disciplines
  • Adaptable and flexible, demonstrating a positive and proactive approach towards change
  • A growth mindset; eagerness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced trading environment.
  • Experience driving reliability improvements across a team or service

Desirable
