Systems Engineers handle the software configuration to make sure everything works given the various customer configurations.
Job Description
The System Engineer role will form part of multi-disciplined project teams to design and deliver complex mission-critical voice and data systems. The systems may be used directly by our customers or by Motorola Solutions to deliver Managed Services to our customers. The System Engineer will work in the post-sales phases of projects and may support multiple projects in parallel, depending on size and complexity. There may also be a requirement to provide support to pre-sales activities.
The System Engineer role can operate at different levels within the organisation and/or projects. The level of the role will be determined by the size and complexity of the project or activity, as well as the level of the individual within the TS organisation. The System Engineering role can be fulfilled at any level within the TS career ladder; however, the engineering staff at lower levels will focus on smaller projects or elements of larger projects.
Main duties:
- Perform detailed design to refine and develop communication system solutions and services which satisfy the requirements of the customer, end users and operator
- Undertake the generation of system documentation and equipment lists using relevant tools and processes.
- Undertake presentations of technical solutions and services to customers, project teams and management.
- Work together with project managers to help track progress, decisions and changes.
Depending on the project scope, a System Engineer might be the technical lead responsible for the entire solution, overseeing the design, deployment and test teams until the project is completed. Alternatively, the System Engineer role might specialise in a particular area or sub-system based on the specifics of the area or project in which they are working.
The System Engineer role may also fulfil the role of a Subject Matter Expert (SME) supporting projects, products and opportunities across the wider region.
The scope of responsibility for a Technical Staff System Engineer will be determined by their seniority in the organisation and the composition of the project team they are working with.
The System Engineer role responsibilities will include the types of activities listed below;
- Validating the client’s needs & requirements against pre-sales design
- Perform detailed design to refine the required system & service solutions
- Design reviews in accordance with the Technical Staff process.
- Bill of Materials and equipment ordering
- Generation of system-specific technical documentation to project quality standards and processes
- Working with product groups & 3rd Parties to ensure equipment and sub-systems are available to meet project requirements and timescales.
- Requirements Management.
- Providing technical support for the deployment of the project
- Timely detection and resolution of deviations from the design.
- Participating in project reviews and identifying risks, issues and lessons learned
- Adhering to applicable processes and maintaining accurate records.
- Ensuring systems meet quality and security standards.
- Management and closure of open technical issues to the customer’s satisfaction.
- Proactively reporting back into the organisation and escalating where appropriate.
- Developing and/or executing test strategies and plans to ensure the solution(s) work as designed and requirements are fulfilled.
- Manage and/or perform implementation of APCO P25 communication system solutions and services which satisfy the requirements of the customer, end user and operator
- Provides technical support for Solution Staging, as required
- Lead or participate in Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) while coordinating the technical aspects of the acceptance testing.
- Responsible for the installation, integration, testing, and commissioning of MSI and 3rd party solutions (with support from the supplier/vendor)
- Responsible for identifying, investigating and troubleshooting technical issues during project implementation
- Responsible for on-site Acceptance Tests, while coordinating the technical aspects of the acceptance testing.
- Update of technical documentation and technical change management
- Provide technical support during all project phases through to handover to the Support organisation
Basic Requirements
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- University degree or equivalent education in one of the following faculties: Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Network Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering
- At least 5 years of professional experience in the area, e.g. Computer System and Network Engineer, Telecommunications Engineer, Field Network Engineer, Field Service Engineer, Customer Support Engineer or equivalent
- Excellent knowledge in Data and Network (LAN, WAN, Security, etc.)
- Excellent knowledge in Operating Systems and Applications (Linux, Windows, Virtualisation, etc.)
- Excellent knowledge in Radio Frequency RF (Base Station TX/RX, Mobile /Portable Radio, RF test equipment )
- Manual skills for field work, like wiring, cabling, and physical installation of equipment, in addition to commissioning and testing tasks.
- Valid Driving license
- Availability and willingness to travel (80%), inside and outside the country of residence;
- Fluent in English.
- Experience in one or more of the following would be an added advantage:
- Radio Communication Systems, Command and Control Systems, Technical Analysis and Problem Troubleshooting;
- System integration and testing experience in Motorola-specific technology, i.e. ASTRO P25, DIMETRA TETRA, MOTOTRBO DMR and NICE Voice Logging
