The VFX department delivers across multiple disciplines, channels, clients, and products, creating animated characters, computer-generated products, real-time environments, and more. As a Surfacing Lead, you will be responsible for driving the visual aesthetic of 3D assets through expert material creation, texturing, and look development. This role requires a blend of technical precision and artistic sensitivity, ensuring assets meet high visual standards. You will lead a team of surfacing artists, establish workflows, and collaborate with other teams for seamless asset integration into production.

What does a ‘Surfacing Lead’ do at Hogarth?

As a Surfacing Lead, you will be responsible for driving the look and feel of 3D assets through expert material creation, texturing, and look development. This role combines technical precision with artistic sensitivity, ensuring assets meet the highest visual standards across a wide range of styles and project requirements. You will lead a team of surfacing artists, establish workflows, maintain consistency across deliverables, and collaborate closely with modelling, lighting, and pipeline teams to ensure seamless integration of assets into production.

Responsibilities

  • Making templates for surface texturing, material creation, and look development with an emphasis on photo-realism, accuracy, detail, and function, execute manual adjustments of lookdev parameters to address notes.
  • Manage teams of artists to create stylized textures, shaders, and materials
  • Quality Control: follow QA procedures to ensure the highest quality before release of assets.
  • Technical Control: make sure everything produced fits and works in USD structures.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of modelling, UV, displacement and subdivision workflows.
  • Strong understanding of Houdini, Substance / Mari, Photoshop / Krita and USD with an eye for details.
  • Exposure to USD pipeline a plus.
  • Experience creating shaders a plus.
  • Experience with Production tracking software like Kitsu or Shotgrid
  • 3+ years experience in building asset and surfacing within 3D environments in a mature pipeline.
  • Organised and diligent with production communication and workflows.
