Job Summary
The Art Department at Reel FX Animation in Montreal is seeking artists with strong generalist skills or specialized expertise in environment, prop, vehicle, and/or concept design. The Visual Development Designer creates 2D artwork for creative projects and collaborates with Lighting, Shading, and Look Development Artists to develop various looks and styles, adhering to the Art Director's and Production Designer's guidance.
Must Have
- Create drawings and paintings to explore style and desired final imagery.
- Precisely and accurately follow reference and direction for scene look.
- Create matte paintings for final CG scenes.
- Create multiple drawings and paintings for composite images.
- Perform visual and analytical problem solving in 2D space.
- Work with production team and visual effects supervisor for environment and character looks.
- Degree/diploma in Computer Graphics, Fine Art, Architectural/Industrial Design, or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years experience in Feature Film, Commercial, and/or Video Game production with emphasis on drawing and painting.
- Good eye for color, composition, and detail in organic, hard surface models, and environments.
- Strong understanding of desired look and feel given artistic direction or reference.
- Extensive experience with Photoshop.
- Experience with Illustrator.
- Experience with traditional drawing and/or painting.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Creative and collaborative problem solver, organized and critical of own work.
- Superior craftsmanship.

We’re excited to be back in our Montreal studio Tuesday thru Thursday… come join us! The Art Department is seeking artists with strong generalist skills or specialized expertise in environment, prop, vehicle and/or concept design. The Visual Development Designer is responsible for the creation 2D artwork used as the basis for the ongoing creative project. The Visual Development Designer is also responsible for collaborating with the Lighting, Shading and Look Development Artists to develop a variety of looks and styles, taking into account any styles, directions, and guidance set down by the Art Director and Production Designer.
Responsibilities
- Create drawings and paintings to explore the style and desired result of final imagery
- Precisely and accurately follow reference and direction to create the desired look of a scene
- Create matte paintings to be used in final CG scenes
- Create multiple drawings and paintings to be used as layers or backgrounds in composite images
- Perform visual and analytical problem solving in 2D space
- Work with a production team and visual effects supervisor to create the desired look for environments and characters that may reflect any of a wide variety
Qualifications
- Degree/diploma in Computer Graphics, Fine Art, Architectural/Industrial Design, or related field; or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 2 years experience in Feature Film, Commercial and/or Video Game production with an emphasis on drawing and painting
- A good eye for color, composition and detail as it relates to organic models, hard surface models and environments
- A strong understanding of how things should look and feel given specific artistic direction or reference
- Extensive experience with Photoshop
- Experience with Illustrator
- Experience with traditional drawing, and/or painting
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- A creative and collaborative problem solver who is organized and critical of his or her own work.
