Job Description

The KABC-TV (ABC7) Sports News Internship (Spring 2025) offers hands-on experience in sports journalism. Interns will participate in production meetings, prepare daily sports shows and segments, interview coaches and players, transcribe interviews, research sports news (including online/social media), and observe segment writing, editing, and on-air delivery. The internship provides exposure to newsroom, studio, and field production at locations like Dodger Stadium and Crypto.com Arena. Responsibilities include contributing to programs like "Slam Dunk" and "Sunday Night Sports."
Good To Have:
  • Degree in broadcast journalism, communications, or related field
  • Coursework in producing, writing, or editing
  • Journalism/TV production experience
  • Experience in TV news script writing
Must Have:
  • Experience in sports/sports journalism/media
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Enrolled in accredited college/university
  • Available for 40 hours/week, including nights/weekends
  • Reliable transportation and housing in Glendale area

About the Role & Program

KABC-TV (ABC7) is an ABC owned television station (OTV), located in Glendale, Los Angeles County. The station is in the #2 ranked television market in the country. Weekly, our team at ABC7 produces over sixty-three hours of local news, public affairs, magazine programs and public service campaigns! The internship program is designed to provide you with an educational experience that complements your academic studies. You will have an opportunity to participate in developmental programming, contribute to daily operations of a major market television station, and learn about what we do.

Join our team to experience being a part of the local sports production involved with the Eyewitness News Sports Department. From basketball to baseball, and hockey to golf, SoFi Stadium to the Rose Bowl, we cover the top stories in Los Angeles and beyond!

The approximate dates of this internship are February 2025 to early June 2025.

What You Will Do

  • Attend production meetings and be involved in the preparation of daily sports shows, segments and special programming like “Slam Dunk” and “Sunday Night Sports”

  • Interview coaches, players, transcribe the interviews, and log and observe sports telecasts

  • Research and contribute to sports news topics (including online/social media news research)

  • Observe how sports segments are written, edited, and delivered on-air

  • Observe production in the newsroom, in-studio, and in the field at locations like Dodger Stadium and the Crypto.com Arena

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience (academic, employment, or extracurricular) within sports and/or sports journalism or media

  • Experience using Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Working toward a degree in broadcast journalism, communications, television production or related field

  • Previous coursework in producing, writing, or editing

  • Previous experience (academic or internship) in journalism (print and/or broadcast); television, news and new media production; and/or television news script writing

Education

  • Be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR must have graduated from a college/university within 6 months at time of application posting OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Professional Internship

  • Undergraduate students in their Junior or Senior year or recently graduated within the past 6 months preferred

Eligibility Requirements & Program Information

Candidates for this opportunity MUST meet all of the below requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Have not completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program.

  • Possess unrestricted work authorization

Additional Information

  • Able to have a consistent, reliable work schedule throughout the internship

  • The approximate dates of this internship are February 2025 to early June 2025

  • Fully available to work 40 hours per week during a Monday through Sunday schedule (hours and days to be determined by your supervisor and could include nights and/or weekends)

  • Able to provide own housing for the duration of the internship program​ in the Glendale, California area

  • Able to provide/have reliable transportation to/from work​

The pay rate for this role in California is $17.28 per hour.
