The Senior Software Engineer will design, analyze requirements, develop, implement, test, debug, and maintain software solutions for ADTRAN products. Responsibilities include designing and developing software applications, adhering to Agile/Scrum best practices, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. The role involves designing multiple networking protocols, SDX Access and Aggregation software, and the Mosaic Cloud Platform management solution. Additionally, the engineer will perform software design, feasibility studies, and documentation. The role also includes unit and system-level testing, bug fixing, and software deployment. The engineer will organize and coordinate development activities within schedule and product constraints. The role involves 5-8 years of professional experience and requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.

  • Solid foundation in computer science.
  • Experience developing in embedded Linux applications.

  • Experience with scripting languages (Python, Ruby).
  • Experience developing containerized applications.
  • Experience developing and deploying large scale applications.
  • Understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 data networking.
Good to have:
  • Familiarity with software developed for whitebox targets.
  • Familiarity with network operation systems (OcNOS, ONL).
  • Familiarity with L3 commercial software stacks.
  • Familiarity with silicon-based Ethernet switching.
  • Knowledge of Datacom technologies (FTTx, T1/T3).
  • Experience with software version control (gitlab, github).
  • Experience with Agile development principles.
  • Experience with functional programming languages.

Job Summary

The Senior Software Engineer will be responsible for designing, analyzing requirements, developing, implementing, testing, debugging, and maintaining software solutions for ADTRAN products including but not limited to the following: driver development, application development, system software architecture, software test development, and customer assistance. This position requires ability to perform Engineering tasks for a major project or for projects of moderate complexity with limited direction.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design or assist in design and development of software applications and features in a cross-functional Agile development team
  • Adhere to Software Development best practices including Agile/Scrum
  • Partner with others in cross-functional team to ensure team sprint goals are met, broadening skills where needed to achieve team goals
  • Design or assist in the design and development of multiple L2 and L3 networking protocols running on embedded network devices.
  • Design or assist in the design of  SDX Access and Aggregation software including new features and maintenance and enhancement of existing products.
  • Prevent defects from entering the code base through performing comprehensive automated unit and automated integration tests authored in parallel with code
  • Design or assist in the design and development of the Mosaic Cloud Platform management solution.
  • Perform or assist in high-level and low-level software design and implementation of new modules and enhancements to existing software. 
  • Perform or assist in feasibility studies of needed software development. 
  • Document designs, including features definition and provisioning models. 
  • Help to model and define APIs using MIBs, CLI, YANG or similar standards.
  • Conduct and participate in design reviews and code reviews.
  • Plan and perform unit and system level testing of implemented software modules and enhancements.
  • Help fix software bugs found during all testing phases.
  • Work with team to deploy and test incremental software releases.
  • Organize and coordinate development activities within schedule and product constraints.
  • Other projects and assignments may result and be assigned to accommodate the changing needs of the department and the Company.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Computer Information Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent education required.
  • 5-8 years of professional experience is required
  • Familiarity with Ethernet and networking protocols and experience with embedded software design, implementation and debugging ranging from the driver/interrupt level up to the application level including interprocess communication and multi-threading techniques is required.
  • A solid foundation in computer science, with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, software engineering, and functional programming techniques is required.
  • Experience developing in embedded Linux applications.
  • Experience with C/C++
  • Experience with at least one modern scripting programming language (Python, Ruby, Groovy, Perl, Bash).
  • Experience developing containerized applications (Docker or equivalent).
  • Experience developing and deploying large scale applications.
  • Solid understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 data networking principles (TCP/IP, IP protocols, Ethernet switching, OAM) is required.
  • Familiarity with lab test equipment that would be needed to unit or system level test the software component design is required.
  • Travel is limited and rare for this position

Preferred Qualifications (Optional)

  • Familiarity with software developed for whitebox and custom hardware targets.
  • Familiarity network operation systems usage, maintenance, and customization for NOS such as OcNOS and ONL.
  • Familiarity with L3 commercial software stacks like SSI and Metaswitch.
  • Familiarity with programming and control of silicon-based Ethernet switching and routing.
  • Knowledge of Datacom technologies, , FTTx, T1/T3, SNMP, CLI, BPON, GPON, and SONET experience preferred.
  • Experience with at least one modern software version control workflow system (gitlab, github, bitbucket) is preferred.
  • Experience with Agile development principles, including the Scaled Agile Framework preferred.
  • Experience with at least one modern functional programming language (Scala, Erlang, Elixir, Haskell) is a bonus.
