Job Description

This Senior Systems Engineer role at Silicon Labs involves researching targeted applications (e.g., Smart Appliances, E-Metering) and technologies (e.g., BT/BLE, Thread, ZigBee) to generate technical requirements for IoT hardware and software roadmaps. Responsibilities include collaborating with Product Marketing, engaging customers, performing feasibility studies, verifying system features, and documenting requirements. The role also involves identifying innovations, prototyping, training internal audiences, and providing deep technical support.
Good To Have:
  • Experience in the semiconductor industry
  • In-depth understanding of hardware IP architecture, development, and verification
  • Experience in embedded software development, including firmware and peripheral handling
  • Knowledge of the IP design process for analog or digital IP
  • Proficiency with electronic bench test equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
  • Experience with one or more Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS) such as FreeRTOS, uc/OS, or Zephyr
Must Have:
  • Collaborate with Product Marketing to guide technical product roadmap
  • Collaborate with engineers at driver customers
  • Perform end-application teardown analysis
  • Conduct technical research on standards and applications
  • Perform feasibility studies of potential system-level innovations
  • Verify system features meet customer requirements
  • Use a requirements management tool to capture and track market and product requirements
  • Train internal audiences on new applications, features, and technologies
  • Provide deepest level of technical support to customer-facing teams
  • Develop and improve systems team processes
  • BSc or MSc in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent
  • 7+ years of industry experience
  • Extensive knowledge of Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocols or 802.15.4 networking stacks (Zigbee, Thread)
  • Strong understanding of embedded microcontroller architectures and features
  • Good understanding of embedded application design
  • Hands-on experience with radio firmware development at PHY and MAC layers
  • Proficiency in developing and debugging wireless communication protocols
  • Experience with IoT communication protocols (Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, Wi-Sun)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
  • Proficiency in using lab equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, signal generators)
  • Experience with modern project management tools (Confluence, Jira, Portfolio Manager, MS Project)

Meet the Team

Silicon Labs Systems Team’s mission is to ensure our products have the right features and technologies to win in our target market segments. The team is responsible for generating technical requirements for our products by researching system requirements from the application level to the SoC feature level.

The Role

This role entails researching targeted applications (E.g., Smart Appliances, Doorbells, E-Metering) or technologies (E.g., BT/BLE, Thread and ZigBee Standards, SW Modeling) and generates requirements to drive our IoT hardware and software roadmaps. Requirements are created via strong comprehension of various standards, tearing down end-applications, engaging our customer’s engineering teams, and performing feasibility studies of new system-level solutions or optimizations. These requirements are documented in our requirements management tool and used to develop our product roadmap.

In addition to requirements generation and documentation, this role will identify and prototype high-value innovations, generate internal collateral, train internal audiences, and publish technical whitepapers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BSc or MSc in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent with 7+ years of industry experience
  • Extensive knowledge of Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocols, covering all layers of the stack (PHY, MAC, Link Layer, L2CAP, GATT, GAP, etc.). or 802.15.4 networking stacks, such as Zigbee or Thread
  • A strong understanding of embedded microcontroller architectures and features
  • A good understanding of embedded application design: requirement analysis, HW design, firmware and application development, bench evaluation, and debugging
  • Hands-on experience with radio firmware development at the PHY and MAC layers.
  • Proficiency in developing and debugging wireless communication protocols.
  • Experience with IoT communication protocols such as Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, or Wi-Sun.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to explain technical concepts to a wide range of audiences, including senior engineering leaders.
  • Proficiency in using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, spectrum analyzers, and signal generators.
  • Experience with modern project management tools (Confluence, Jira, Portfolio Manager, MS Project, etc.).
