Job Description

As a Software Engineer II-Backend at Microsoft's Viva Engage team, you'll design, build, and maintain services used by millions globally. You'll collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams to create a positive user experience. This role involves working on a large-scale platform with hundreds of thousands of participants, requiring expertise in areas such as high-availability, scalability, and performance optimization. You'll improve service reliability, performance, and latency and use data-driven approaches (A/B testing) to make improvements. The backend stack includes Linux on Azure, GraphQL, API gateway, various databases (Postgres, CosmosDB, Redis, RabbitMQ), Java and Ruby on Rails services, and container orchestration (Mesos and Kubernetes).

Must have:

Bachelor's Degree in CS or related field
2+ years experience in software engineering
Proficient in Java, Ruby, or other languages
Experience building large-scale systems
Experience with multiple datastores

Good to have:

Efficient debugging skills

Experience with GraphQL

Our backend stack: 

Linux on Azure
GraphQL API gateway
Postgres, CosmosDB, Redis, RabbitMQ
Java and Ruby on Rails services, deployed as docker containers
Mesos and Kubernetes container orchestration
Observability: Grafana metrics, Azure Data Explorer log aggregation

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
Proficient coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, Ruby.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

Possess efficient, tenacious debugging skills using logs and metrics.
Excellent programmer: your code is maintainable, and you write quality tests.
Experience building large scale, resilient distributed systems.
Experience with multiple datastores (SQL and NoSQL) and data access patterns.
Experience developing and operating microservices.
Experience with GraphQL.
